The 80's are when leaders like Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher are credited with introducing neoliberal policies and doing away with older Keynesian policies. Reagan is a hero to many conservatives, for cutting welfare and red tape on business (as well as increasing employment). Other things they supported were free trade agreements and strengthened intellectual property rights.

Although I don't think that in the US and the UK it was actually a change in the Zeitgeist. It was such the characters of Reagan and Thatcher as one can see when you look at their successors. In Germany today, it's actually a different wind blowing. People actually move more to the (capitalist) right. Thank's for correcting me on that, I've been to focused on my own history.

The Shiites are the heavy majority in Iraq, 60% of the population are Shiite. Saddam prevented them from ever taking power. In his absence they will stay in power.
