May 6, 2011 - every contractor I talk to says vinyl gutters suck

EEPInstructional Says:

May 28, 2011 - Most contractors will prefer metal gutter, that is true. However, vinyl gutters are a good alternative for a lower cost, DIY project. Properly installed, vinyl gutters will perform well, and last a long time. Being a simple system to install with no special tools required makes it quite DIY friendly. This is an alternative to people who don't want to hire a contractor to do the job.

Jul 27, 2011 - Wow, great video. I had nothing good to say about my vinyl rain gutters until I watched this. But now I can see the previous home owner installed them way too low - about 1.5" below the bottom of the drip edge. The screws go into the fascia rather than the drip edge. This causes the water to go right around the back of the gutter and leak. He also used silicone to put the pieces together. Hopefully I can fix his mess now.

Aug 24, 2011 - the installers are installing the system wrong, whereas the drill is in reverse while putting in the screws..

Sep 12, 2011 - I'd assume contractors prefer aluminum because they can fabricate the runs onsite whereas plastic does not allow that to be done. But plastic I think is stronger long term PLUS you can put a ladder against it without damaging the system.

Sep 30, 2011 - as a former roofing sub-contractor, for any DIYers I want to say empty the gutters first. either use a leaf blower or buy some of those cheapo cloth gloves that are like 50 pair for $10 and clear by hand. also, take the gutter down in sections, don't just let it flop over and drop like these idiots did. either work in pairs or support unsecured end with a ladder. an extra minute will save you from taking a shot to the face, knocked off a ladder, having fascia get torn off etc etc.

Dec 12, 2011 - I wonder what kind of screws do you use for the vinyl?

qasion Says:

Dec 12, 2011 - Does this system have the inside/outside corners like the metal one?

EEPInstructional Says:

Dec 13, 2011 - Yes, this gutter system has inside and outside corners available.

qasion Says:

Dec 13, 2011 - I really like this one,,it looks neater, sturdier, and pretier than the metal thing.

qasion Says:

Dec 14, 2011 - I wonder if they come in different thickness sizes?

Apr 5, 2012 - Great answer about Vinyl gutters being a good low cost alternative for DIY projects. I am a DIY selfer and I could care less about what contractors prefer. I just want something that is low cost and have been proven to work. While I do agree it would make sense for contractors to use more durable longer lasting metal gutters because they are running a business and it would not want to install something that would not last very long in order to protect their reputation.

mcdavidhome100 Says:

Apr 5, 2012 - When I visit the local home depot or lowes to purchase those kind of gutters, what do I need to ask for specifically in order to get the exact same kind of gutters in the video?

May 7, 2012 - Wait a minute! How did he fold the downspout up at the end?! The advertisement was in the way. couldn't see. Otherwise a fantastic video for a do it myself woman!

newtonjoyce Says:

May 7, 2012 - I did this two years ago though and it does leak at the joint. Any one know what I did wrong? thanks

EEPInstructional Says:

May 7, 2012 - Good question! We have a handy item called a Downspout Diverter. Part number M0642. It connects to a standard Traditional vinyl elbow to create the hinge action. It allows the pivot motion. The other option is simply to buy one of our Clip Up Kits (KM 9030). You can find this item at your local home center (do an internet search for: Clip up km9030 ). It contains a 30" downspout extension (2"x3") and the other components needed to to make it a pivoting extension.I hope this helps!

EEPInstructional Says:

May 7, 2012 - Depending on the environment the gutter is installed in and the length of the gutter run, excessive thermal expansion/contraction can cause joiners to 'walk' out of place. To remedy this, you can simply add a two 1/2" rust-resistant screws through the dimples in the top edge of the outer joiner, into the top edge of each gutter section being joined.
