Shyanmar Says:

May 9, 2012 - I'm not saying that I could, am I? ^^Funnily enough, many christians I talked to over the years claim that they're not intolerant to other faiths. But I wonder ... how come that christianity as a whole still believes they, and only they have the sole answers and all others are evil unbelievers? How come there are christians openly opposing gays, atheists, goths, you name it? Where does this hate come from? It's a paradox, it seemse.

TheBlackKatana Says:

May 9, 2012 - if no one is right then what's the point of different religions that believe different things? aren't there absolutes in those religions?

Sistarovat Says:

May 9, 2012 - "He that believeth on Him (Jesus) is not condemned, but he that believeth not is condemned already because he hath not believed on the name of the only begotten Son of God." - John 3:18

Shyanmar Says:

May 9, 2012 - Oh, sure there are absolutes in those religions. But I could write absolutes on a napkin, that doesn't make them true. Look at it logically: No matter what you believe, no matter what you think you know, there is always a small possibility that you're wrong. Simple as that.

TheBlackKatana Says:

May 9, 2012 - but in the end there's an absolute truth right?

Shyanmar Says:

May 9, 2012 - In terms of what? I'm pretty sure that 1+1=2 could be regarded as an absolute truth in the end (although even that always depends on the situation). But I doubt that's what you're talking about. See, we don't know everything there is to know and we never will, so there is always that margin of error involved. And it always will be. Anyone that tries to convince you that he, and only he knows the absolute truth of the universe is a liar.

LoveGodLoveEachOther Says:

May 9, 2012 - Hi Shyanmar - Agreed that the label we place on ourselves does not make one better than the other. My limited experience in conversations with atheists leads me to believe atheists are closer to spirituality than some religious folks (take the Pharisees in the time of Jesus as an example).

LoveGodLoveEachOther Says:

May 9, 2012 - Hi Shyanmar - Check out Ned Dougherty's story (and others) at the near-death com/atheists website.I would be interested in your thoughts on how other atheists have found God via near-death experiences.

jmvergis20 Says:

May 9, 2012 - Don't think of me as strange- I'm a Democrat and a Christian. Right off the bat, that makes me strange, doesn't it? Nevermind that. I'm willing to question my own faith. Let me tell you, not all Christians are the same, much like not all Bhuddists or Hindus or even Muslims are. The hate is coming from MISUNDERSTANDING OF THE WORD. I'll be honest. God loves everybody, but he likes atheists better than hating Christians.

MrStevensgr Says:

May 10, 2012 - You are probably young in the faith, but from experience you can't reason with people that don't believe their is no God. They are here to cause division and if they really wanted to know the truth, they would be more open and less hostile.

Shyanmar Says:

May 10, 2012 - Huh. You might be right. Although I'd label myself as more of a philosopher. I don't even know why this interests me. I contemplate a lot of belief systems, somehow. LaVeyan Satanism tends to be one of my favorites, since it's basically just about living and enjoying life without care for a hypothetical afterlife. But same thing there, I can take all of these principles without being a LaVeyan satanist. Interesting stuff, really.

Shyanmar Says:

May 10, 2012 - Heh. You know, I heard a quote from an atheist once. "If your God has a plan for everybody, he also apparently wants me to be an atheist, so who are you to question his will?"I think that misunderstanding isn't the source of hate, though. Hearing a lot of those "christian" rants against numerous things, I'd say it comes more from purposely misinterpreting the bible. Words can be twisted to serve just about any means.

TheXtrini2dbonex Says:

May 10, 2012 - Your thinking on a human and earthly level. You don't understand God's plan... His ways are greater than you can ever think or imagine... Atheists on the other hand make their own decisions...God's plan is for all of them to come to repentance and be saved...

jmvergis20 Says:

May 10, 2012 - That would be a misconception as well. God wills for everybody to love him, just like He loves us. But He didn't want us to be like robots, He wanted REAL love, which was something totally different. It required us to have the chioce.

jmvergis20 Says:

May 10, 2012 - At least tell me you don't believe in that "Ancient Aliens" BS? Then I'd totally be fine.

jmvergis20 Says:

May 10, 2012 - Misunderstanding was the source of many different kinds of hate.Including racial hatred. People were uneducated about how if one had more melanin in their bodies, then they would be just like African-Americans about 200 years ago. They had no idea! They, in fact, thought that they were doing GOOD(I want you to see the similarities here and relate this back to what I said earlier about the source of hate being the misunderstanding of the word.)by enslaving the Africans(eventually African-American)

TheGodDamnedAtheist Says:

May 11, 2012 - What? No! There's no evidence for that either... The whole bible and alien bull**** is worse than claiming that the world was made in seven days, you know? You get people attacking Christianity because of lack of evidence, then you get them talking about aliens and they are as convinced with aliens as people are with this other stuff, it is really stupid... But anywho I think I've made my point with all my arguments...

Shyanmar Says:

May 11, 2012 - I'm thinking on a logica, rational level. That's the only level where thinking makes any sense. There is nothing the human mind cannot come to understand, given enough time. Your stating that your god and his plan are beyond human understanding is just a cheap excuse.By the way, if we can't understand his plan, how do YOU know what he wants ME to do?You're right. I make my own decisions. And it feels fucking amazing. Why would I want to give that up?

Shyanmar Says:

May 11, 2012 - See, this is another thing I question. If he's omnipotent and omnibenevolent, as well as omniscient, why did he create a race of imperfect, petty little beings like us in the first place? And for what reason? To love him? And how can he love us if he lets the most unspeakable atrocities happen? Even in his own name? It doesn't make a lick of sense.

Shyanmar Says:

May 11, 2012 - You could call it misunderstanding or lack of actual knowledge. And I agree, among other things, it can cause hate and prejudice. That's why I support a rational, logic/knowledge-based mindset. Religion is also something that was originally created because of a lack of knowledge, as a way to explain then-inexplicable phenomena, as I believe. I feel we're in the process of outgrowing the need for it today. Some are already there, more will follow, I presume.

Thechristiancullen Says:

May 11, 2012 - Jesus had a few problems with religion - after all it was the bearded religious non-pork eaters who wanted to crucify HIM.

LoveGodLoveEachOther Says:

May 11, 2012 - Howard Storm is another great example of an atheist finding Jesus and God through a near-death encounter. Read about his experience (and others) at the 'near-death com/atheists' website. Howard became a Reverend after his experience.
