Sep 20, 2009 - This really is a great improvement. 2things. If you know you are going to be setting traps cut some material first and let it season a bit. Secondly practice....its one thing to watch a vid or read a book it is another thing to actually do it. Ever make a pauite trap?

HedgehogLeatherworks Says:

Sep 20, 2009 - Good points you make! I couldn't agree more... I admittedly have not used this trap to kill anything before but I plan to do so when I feel the time is right. As far as paiutes, I have made a few but haven't experimented with them as much. Thanks for your comments!

Sep 20, 2009 - A book that i cant recomend highly enough...Fur food and survival...by emil r johnson....Trapping is an art and while a hunter may be lucky to feed himself a good trapper can feed the whole camp..Barrel traps, bow traps, shotgun traps, net traps....you name it is in the book.

Sep 21, 2009 - Right on! I will be sure to check it out! Thanks!

Sep 23, 2009 - okay i made my figure 4 the same way you did in the video clip. But when i went to test it, to trigger it, it took an extensive amount of force to get the dead fall to.. fall. any idea what i could have done wrong?

HedgehogLeatherworks Says:

Sep 23, 2009 - Hard to say without seeking it... but you may want to make a longer trigger stick. If it is too short, there won't be enough leverage to make the trap spring... experiment with it though! That is where the true learning occurs!

Dec 7, 2009 - I did the same trap (before I saw this video) and I got a smallest mouse ever, the stone totally crushed it. The skull bone was flat as a paper lol.

Feb 7, 2010 - Last night I built this trap for the first time and it took nearly an hour to carve and then re-carve my sticks to get it just right. The concept of this trap is so simple that it may seem unnecessary to practice, but I can attest that building this properly is much tougher than it looks. The placement, shape, and size of the notches as well as the length of the sticks you use all contribute to the success of this trap. Practice, practice, practice.

Mar 8, 2010 - Awesome that was a super touchy trap. I always have trouble making the hair trigger.

Apr 23, 2010 - Very nice instruction. Looking at the old version, the one which works only from one side, it's clear, that this is the optimal way to make F4 traps.

Jun 20, 2010 - You know, this is the figure 4 i actually learned, i could never get the traditional one to work. but hey, whatever works, thats what survival is about.

mikeoutdoorsman Says:

Jul 10, 2010 - You said you showed how little force it took to set it off, but you didn't show it being set off from the side, of course its going to come off easier being pushed down. It was a great alternative approach to figure 4 trap but I still find figure 4 trap more sensitive especially when you learn one little tip, and that is you shave a small section off the back side under the trigger stick on the upright, so that if an animal pushes down it releases easy, same with any sideways force.

mikeoutdoorsman Says:

Jul 10, 2010 - BTW, I don't know why so many people teach figure 4 and pauti trap wrong, probably because they taught themselves or learned from others that never learned the right way.Always make the slanted horizontal longer so that the rock is not towering over the upright because you don't want the rock reaching and falling on the upright and slowing down the rock.Another tip is Y stick works great as an upright, makes it more stable.

Apr 4, 2011 - Wow, you make it look so easy! I'm new to this and I spent at least 45 minute making one that didn't work....I gotta keep practicing.
