May 23, 2012 - not to mention that the 1920s were a period of horrific political violence in Europe, especially Germany, where Hitler, Goering, etc, were trying to organize the various paramilitaries and Freikorps into some kind of cohesive movement (Hitler said it would take about 10 years, he was just about correct). The SA and SS both were founded in the 1920s, and street battles with Communists, Spartacists, etc etc, made Germany into a mess that saw the fall of the Republic.

May 24, 2012 - Sorry to tell you this, the 70's sucked. I lived through the 60's and 70's. Have you ever heard of, "Stagflation, Malaise and the Misery Index? The 70's were horrible culturally and economically. The fuel shortages, gas lines, social unrest, etc defined that decade. My father grew up in the 20's. In 1926 there was around 1% unemployment. The middle class exploded, look at the Art and Architecture from the era. Learn some real history. It was a wonderfull decade.

May 24, 2012 - More people die today in car wrecks, heart ailments, than they did in the 20's. People pretty much lived as long as they do now if they made through child birth. The 20's is part of the modern era. They weren't practicing Mideval Medicine then. The thing that throws off lifespan statistics is the infant mortality rate. More babies died as infants then. If you count all the abortions done today in the statistics, our average lifespans would be much shorter. It is all how you want to count.

And the depression lasted a long time despite the fact that the depression-era was less sexually promiscuous, and less drunk. And the Romans were very decadent for hundreds of years before the collapse of their society. The 20s had jazz, booze, sex and fun. The 30s were soup lines, promises, Joads and Roosevelt. So 20s awesome, 30s sucked.

Kerosene fridges, and other household appliances were becoming more and more popular. Radio and phonographs were reloutionishing the way we heard things. Jazz was the most popular form of music. Females who revealed their ankles *gasp smoked in public, applied heavy amounts of makeup and cut their hair short were known as 'flappers'. In general 1920 was the decade of change.
