Raggedy9 Says:

Dec 26, 2011 - Aside from his line readings, his "acting" so to speak, what I find astonishing is his realization of the soliloquy as a piece of film. He probably would have played it quite differently in a stage performance. Here the camera [that is, the viewer] climbs to the highest turret in the castle, sees the waves crashing below, thinks of jumping, and enters Hamlet's brain from behind. Also very strong use of the knife. A movie must show us, not merely tell us. Olivier accomplishes this quite daringly.

Jan 7, 2012 - Brando and Dean were far better in my opinion. Far more human when acting, and that counts.

Mar 11, 2012 - Well, to acting theories put forth here... I don't believe that any actor in here can say "My uncle killed my father, married my mother, stole my kingdom and exiled me as a lunatic, thus killing my youthful innocence and turning my cheerful sense of humor into a wicked darkness, leaving me to now contemplate suicide vs. avenging my father as his ghost is urging me to do as it haunts me for eternity" So how the F can you remember how you felt when it F-ing happened?! -A true craft gets you there.

Apr 26, 2012 - Call me nuts, but I prefer Branagh's version so much more. Though with Olivier his tops is Richard III.

AngryDragon22 Says:

May 1, 2012 - Every time I read this play(it's one of my faves), I hear Mr. Olivier's voice when I get to Hamlet's lines. He will always be the best Hamlet to me.

stellalouise1 Says:

May 12, 2012 - The obnoxious, overly dramatic music is like like a screaming baby in the theater.

cavaliergirl18 Says:

May 12, 2012 - I keep coming back to watch this. It's amazing. I have to deliver this for a public speaking class, and the more I study this video the more I realize I could never mimic the level of emotion here.

DiegoHellion Says:

miladymell Says:

May 25, 2012 - There is a real "staginess" here which doesn't hold up that well...but still, some moments that are so powerful.
