Large associations ( for example, the American Taekwondo Association) focus on spreading the arts as a sport and making them accessible to a wider range of people. They do this to the detriment of the arts. They also often do not teach the more lethal forms. No form of fighting can render you invulnerable to weapons though. Only a fool thinks so.

Mar 30, 2011 - I don't know what state you come from but here in Michigan I could get off on self defense. There was a story in the local newspaper about a cashier who chased down a robber who pulled a gun out on him, hit him upside the head with a bat and killed him. No charges were filed.

Techniques utilized in MMA fighting are damaging enough. Techniques that are purely lethal have no place there, the object is not to kill your opponent. None of it was created in a time where firearms were a factor, but calling it crap is the greatest display of ignorance. You must be a terrible fighter.

Moreover, if you show your moves and you do not disarm them right away, then they are even smarter and stiffer, and more determined on their feet.

Apr 24, 2011 - Personally, I think if you avoid trouble you don't find it but I know this kind of stuff is for extraordinary circumstances. That makes it even tougher to execute perfectly, in my opinion, if you are suddenly put in a life or death situation. It's best if you live in a conservative state where you can carry a gun and make sure to out rank your opponent in size and skill; speaking ballistically, of course. There's nothing wrong with physical training but we are fragile.

May 9, 2011 - I agree, it's critical to walk before u run. BUT, the attack to be ready for is from the book "Put 'Em Down, Take 'Em Out!: Knife Fighting Techniques From Folsom Prison" (search for the vid: "Stabbing, or How Knife-Fighting and Defense Pan Out").
