Apr 21, 2012 - No you're wrong at the core Emo is basically just another version of Hardcore Punk, they did have Pop punk influences came in later, but I was wrong about Indie it actually covers a wide variety of music and obviously stands for independent label and usually refers to bands that play older, softer styles of rock music even though it is an umbrella term as Grunge is also defined as Indie, but Grunge has Heavy Metal influences

SonicYouth789 Says:

Apr 21, 2012 - Actually I take that back Indie rock also has alot Punk influences combined with lots of other softer genres but yeah considering what it stands for, it is more of an Umbrella term I guess the influence of New Wave in Indie rock is what gives Emo its softer sound, although genres like Grunge incorporate more of a Heavy Metal influence even though they also combine Indie rock influences and btw Emo bands are generally very whiny, no offense

SonicYouth789 Says:

Apr 21, 2012 - I think the heavier bands lean closer to Screamo tbh

SonicYouth789 Says:

Apr 21, 2012 - The bottom line here is that definitions change over the years, for example Heavy metal used to lean closer to Hard rock when bands like Thin Lizzy were around, Indie rock was an umbrella term but is now used to describe a specific style, lots of bands mix and match, but in my opinion proper Emo bands have softer sounds than you would find in Start Something by todays standards, bands like The Rites of Spring have that grittier Punk influence you're after

SonicYouth789 Says:

Apr 21, 2012 - Btw the older style of Heavy Metal is now called Traditional Heavy Metal and is seperate to Heavy Metal

SonicYouth789 Says:

Apr 21, 2012 - Nonetheless I wouldn't describe Start Something as gloomy Pop punk it leans closer to Alternative metal, besides Liberation has more of Pop-like sound to it

SonicYouth789 Says:

Apr 21, 2012 - Basically bands change their styles but that doesn't mean Emo music is in all their albums, A Beautiful Lie by 30 Seconds to Mars has Post-grunge, Emo, Hard rock and Post-hardcore, whereas Start Something has Alternative metal, Alternative rock and Hard rock. Lostprophets incorporate some other styles including Post-grunge in their music.

SonicYouth789 Says:

Apr 21, 2012 - Now take A Beautiful Lie as an example, none of the other styles, Post-grunge, Hard rock or Post-hardcore would water it down and make it sound softer except for Emo. I think the Post-grunge sound is most recognisable in Start Something from listening to the album and I know a 'dude you need get out more' line is coming up but tbh I love figuring out the genres of this type of music lol
