Jun 12, 2011 - Can the cellulose be dissolved faster? Maybe by heating the solution(possibly under pressure to prevent the NH4OH===>NH3+H2O equilibrium from shifting to the right too much)
chemicalsymphony Says:
Jun 12, 2011 - I don't think the waiting for a month part is strictly necessary. I tried before, without the wait, and it worked, but my yield was terrible.
TheChemlife Says:
Jun 12, 2011 - the longer the wait, the more effective. an alternate method would be to continue to add fresh celulose and remove the old stuff. however for demonstration purposes to get any decent yield a long waiting period is important. in all honesty i probably waited closer to a month and a half and my yield was still terrible.

Jun 12, 2011 - nope, turns out the red dot only shows up in bad lighting so i got better lighting :P i will be getting one soon though

Jun 17, 2011 - What concentration was the H2SO4 used?
TakronRust Says:
Sep 21, 2011 - You said let it sit for a month. Would heating it help complex it faster?
ConorC96 Says:
Nov 28, 2011 - You could make carbon fiber from it too! :D

Dec 10, 2011 - how much rayon thread is produced? I mean weight............

Jan 23, 2012 - Love your vids, very informative! Keep up the good work.
HUsoldier171 Says:
Feb 3, 2012 - @thechemlife what concentration was your sulfuric acid and how did you use because the first time i did this i used 50 ml of 95% and nothing happened except it made a very cellulose corrosive substance that if it touched something made of paper it was gone in a blink of an eye. almost like a piranha solution but faster
TheChemlife Says:
Feb 3, 2012 - ya 95% is WAY to high. mine was very dilute. just enough to drop the pH of the solution a bit. I think mine was 20-30% at the most.
HUsoldier171 Says:
Feb 3, 2012 - okay thanks once i get around to it ill filter the reagent and try again. but what was it that made the solution able to disolve paperr that fast i mean it was gone the second it made contact
idunno4got Says:
Feb 4, 2012 - is this the same way we use to make clothes out of rayon?
idunno4got Says:
Feb 4, 2012 - i made that comment without watchingt the end of your video
pielover8888 Says:
Feb 29, 2012 - yay. now i can knit with my mom after waiting a month.. yay. -.-
