Mar 26, 2012 - If a 13 year old kid would tell me: "Calculus is simple and straightforward." My eyes would pop out of their sockets. :o

Mar 29, 2012 - sounds like his maths brains come from his mother's side lol

Mar 29, 2012 - There is a difference between making grammatical errors while talking and making grammatical errors when typing. It's much easier to make an error randomly throughout the day.

Apr 2, 2012 - He's right. You can only learn maths when you know why you're doing something. When I help my son with maths homework I say forget that crap your teacher told you. I'll show you *why* you are doing that. Then it makes sense.

Apr 4, 2012 - but the first way is not natural, if I want to understand it deepely I have to make the link with the second. I don't find the first way satisfying alone.

Apr 4, 2012 - but the first way is not natural. I'm not satisfied by the first way alone. I've had trouble for years with it until I made the link with the second way.

Apr 5, 2012 - Arithmetic is just basic maths. Counting, addition, multiplication, etc. Algebra uses variables to signify unknown numbers. Algebra is a huge branch of mathematics with far more than just the use of variables, but that's the traditional Algebra that you learn in grade school, 3x + 10 = 22 stuff like that. You use Arithmetic in Algebra, but don't necessarily use Algebra while performing Arithmetic.

Apr 15, 2012 - When i was 13 i was playing Halo and hated doing algebra. Now i'm in college and takingMultivariable calculus and i still hate it but i have to take it :(

Apr 15, 2012 - speaking as a person "from the arts", I'll take Feynman & his actual wit over any well articulated academic artist asshole ANY DAY :P.

Apr 16, 2012 - that's the standard you have to be at if you want to be a physicist ,you have to be finding calculus easy at 13.most people cant do it as adults.

Apr 28, 2012 - Sad reality. He speaks the truth about taking intelligence out of the school and replacing it with memorization. A monkey can memorize, actually better than any human, this is NOT what marks intelligence. Having a unique way to solve problems in math should be celebrated, not penalized. Free thinking is how we progress mentally and technologically.

Apr 28, 2012 - When I was 12 I started single-variable calculus. Though, I'm not Richard Feynman, sadly *sobs*.

Apr 30, 2012 - Feynman could teach quantum physics to the laymen using nothing but English. Go fuck yourself.

mahballzrhari Says:
May 3, 2012 - he is so right on. While studying math in school, there was less emphasis on getting the results as opposed to using the textbook or teacher's formula - a series of steps that made math less intuitive.
ninjajesus81 Says:
May 3, 2012 - Yeah, I just finished calculus 3 and when I try to apply calculus to my physics work, I struggle. It just seems like in calculus, I was learning to do stuff, but I didn't know why I was doing it or what the significance of the answer was."Take T over the magnitude of T prime and that gives you N". Now, we briefly went over what all that meant, but it wasn't important enough to learn. The only thing that concerns the students is knowing how to find N on the test; forget what it means.
robertej09 Says:
May 5, 2012 - And that's why some people struggle at math, I think. They try and remember so many random formulas and steps without knowing why those steps are taken. That's why advanced mathematics isn't for everybody I guess; because you need to actually _understand_ your work. I taught myself Calculus too, but only the simplest stuff like derivatives and some integration, because I got lazy and didn't wanna take the time to understand it xD I'm taking Calculus next year though :D (I'm in highschool xD)
