May 17, 2012 - They're not always used for that. When i write music for my bands i usually don't put very many breakdowns. Maybe one every other song but when i do its not just fill parts of the song i usually have my 2nd guitarist play it while i play sweeps or some kind of eerie lead. but bands like secrets, asking alexandria, and a lot of other rise records bands tend to use them after every single chorus as fillers and its pretty pathetic

May 18, 2012 - Nothing in music is musically worthless. Breakdowns are grooves, they're musical devices the same way blast beats and tremolo picking are. Also, moshing is a form of dancing, as is "headbanging" or karate kicking shit at venues. Its expression.Also, are you suggesting everything has to have a "deep" intrinsic meaning to be musically okay? People just like to listen to music to relax; everything does not have to be politically, philosophically or metaphorically "deep" to be "okay" in music.

May 18, 2012 - I just think bands shouldn't use the same riff over and over again in every song. That's my biff with "-core". Plenty of metalcore and deathcore bands can play their instruments well and write songs, they just choose not to write transitions, which irks me.

May 19, 2012 - We can agree on that. Quite frankly, what bugs me is the abundance of bandwagon hate for particular bands. For some reason, Asking Alexandria now is getting the brunt of the insults. It's like when nu-metal, metalcore, etc first arrived, people hated it, and some people still do. Sucks that people can't be more constructive.

May 19, 2012 - There's that word: "true". That's my only problem with what you're saying; you're implying that there is such a thing as true or fake in music relative to style. If a band wants to play breakdowns, that's fine, if they want to "overuse" them, that's fine too. People will listen to what speaks to them. I guess we can agree to disagree, sir.

May 19, 2012 - I guess Asking Alexandria stands out for certain things. I don't really know why. People say they play too many breakdowns, but a ton of other bands play even more. People say they're overproduced and then go listen to equally overproduced stuff. I imagine Capture the Crown or some similar band will be the main band on the receiving end of such criticisms soon enough.

May 16, 2012 - The problem with breakdowns is they're musically worthless. They're meant to mosh to, not listen to, and are in no way interesting or thought-provoking. They're like filler for when bands can't figure out what to put in songs. I think one or two an album is more than enough.
