Jan 13, 2012 - In high school (in Portugal in the 70's) I was fooled into believing that memorization was somewhat reprehensible and not real learning. Now I find it extremely difficult to learn difficult foreing languages (I had to give up Japanese) as memorizing. Critical thinking is very important, absolutely, but there's a place for memory exercises too.

I have known several people in my life who IQ tested genius and yet did not possess one personal original thought. They knew a lot of info and that's about it. On the other hand I am completely original thinking and I tested high in IQ, but I know very little. So little that I have trouble trying to articulate my thoughts into words others can understand.

I've only done one in my late teens and quite a lot of it was logic based, and there's absolutely no way that someone who just has a great memory would do particularly well in one of those.

The 1-dimensional thinker sees the picture and immediately starts to put it together. The artistic thinker will look at the picture and see many different possible variations of that picture and representations that relate to images in that picture.

Jan 31, 2012 - Firstly, I agree that the education system is the tool of the devil. Why does Alex have a problem with operative conditioning and pavlovian/skinner education? The bible says that God uses such techniques to train his servants "they that come to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him". In other words God's method for training is to reward the right behaviour and punish the wrong behaviour. Does he mean they are not actually being rewarded.

Feb 5, 2012 - Well, the point I was trying to make is that we general rate intelligence with an I.Q. test which is fundamentally flawed. There are many nuances to intelligence and that test is mostly just looking for the data collector who can focus and perform simple instructions by accessing memory. I just think that people who can look at the data from different perspectives and manipulate and enterchange it are much smarter people.
