Title: The Sound of Silence (Original Version from 1964)
Added: Dec 22, 2009
Author: reptileman117
Duration: 3:6
Description:
Lyrics: Hello darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence In restless dreams I walked alone Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a street lamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night And touched the sound of silence And in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never shared No one dared Disturb the sound of silence "Fools," said I, "you do not know Silence like a cancer grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you" But my words like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming And the sign said "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls And tenement halls And whispered in the sound of silence"This is the original version from 1964 from the album "Wednesday Morning, 3 AM." Just Simon's guitar and the vocals. The famous version was released in 1966. After "Wednesday Morning, 3 AM" flopped, they split up. Without either their knowledge, electric guitars and drums were added and that version of The Sound of Silence became very popular, reaching #1 on the charts in America on New Years Day, 1966. Because of this, Simon and Garfunkel teamed up again and created three more studio albums, one of which one a Grammy award for album of the year and song of the year (Bridge Over Troubled Water).

May 14, 2012 - you can also thank LSD and opium for this song, not to take anything away from the singers

May 14, 2012 - Before I say my response, let me say this: I don't have any problem with anyone doing any type of drug. It's their body, the government shouldn't tell them what they can and cannot put in it. Certain drugs, however, are known to inspire a great deal of art like books, films, and particularly music. Especially in the later half of the 60s. Drugs like marijuana and LSD have played a great role in creating some of the greatest music, and that's a fact whether you are for or against them.

May 14, 2012 - Now for my response. I really don't know everything about how Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel spent their lives, but if I had to guess I would say that they have done their share of experimentation just as most people--especially in that time period. However, I don't think they were doing drugs when Paul Simon wrote this song (1963-1964).

May 14, 2012 - I've heard and read his explanation of this song numerous times and I'm pretty sure it didn't come from drugs. Have you dissected the song itself? Look deeper into it. He also wrote it before the drugs really started to become popular.

May 15, 2012 - It hit me that both me and this song are of an age that comes from a time when the questioning was fervent, persistent, but mannerly.

May 17, 2012 - There's a video (here on YouTube) where Garfunkel explains that the song is meant to get people to talk to each other about their feelings- note that most of the lyrics focus on isolation (the lyrics being the words of the speaker telling a story). Given the time frame, it might have been inspired by the division surrounding the civil rights movement or possibly the fear of the cold war. But the song seems to ask that people -everyone- be more open about their feelings and communicate.

May 20, 2012 - I was born in 1998, and my father played this song for me from time to time when I was younger. We could sit up late at night together, just listening to the beauty in this song over and over again. It didn't mean anything that I didn't understand the words, it was all about the music. Now I love the song even more. Sound of Silence makes today's music sound like shit!

May 24, 2012 - in 19sixty something my mother bought a SIMON and GARFUNKEL album because she loved the song that had radio play in our time-"Bridge Over Troubled Water"- I used her album and heard "Scarboughrough Fair"-"Mrs Robinson"... "The Sounds of Silence" was on the album-I don't even know how to say what that song "was".." IS" to me - but I can assure you neither my Mother nor I were doing LSD...This song has connected at least 1 generation to these phenominal artists- BTW-Thanks for your post
