Description:
For A Dancer, from the album "Western Wall" by Linda Ronstadt and Emmy Lou Harris, in the year 1999Keep a fire burning in your eyePay attention to the open skyYou never know what will be coming downI dont remember losing track of youYou were always dancing in and out of viewI must have thought youd always be aroundAlways keeping things real by playing the clownNow youre nowhere to be foundI dont know what happens when people dieCant seem to grasp it as hard as I tryIts like a song I can hear playing right in my earThat I cant singI cant help listeningAnd I cant help feeling stupid standing roundCrying as they ease you downcause I know that youd rather we were dancingDancing our sorrow away(right on dancing)No matter what fate chooses to play(theres nothing you can do about it anyway)Just do the steps that youve been shownBy everyone youve ever knownUntil the dance becomes your very ownNo matter how close to yoursAnothers steps have grownIn the end there is one dance youll do aloneKeep a fire for the human raceLet your prayers go drifting into spaceYou never know what will be coming downPerhaps a better world is drawing nearAnd just as easily it could all disappearAlong with whatever meaning you might have foundDont let the uncertainty turn you around(the world keeps turning around and around)Go on and make a joyful soundInto a dancer you have grownFrom a seed somebody else has thrownGo on ahead and throw some seeds of your ownAnd somewhere between the time you arriveAnd the time you goMay lie a reason you were aliveBut youll never know

Apr 13, 2009 - Very creative cover of Jackson Brownes' original. I think I like this better because it's less sad and more celebratory of life.

SH000FLY Says:

Apr 15, 2009 - Exactly! I couldn't have said it better myself. Thanks for pinpointing it!

Apr 19, 2009 - there was a real video who took it away the sad bastards

Sep 1, 2009 - Awesome! Yes Linda makes it a celebration. I love at 1:40 Linda shouts "...keep right on dancin NO MATTER WHAT FATE THROWS IN YOUR WAAAAY" and Emmylou and Neil Young chiming in with "there's nothing you can do about it anyway." Jackson Browne wrote a brilliant song and Linda and Emmy just take it to another level. I love Linda's version on Jackson's "Rock Me on The Water." Thanks Shoofly!

Jun 4, 2010 - I really feel that Linda and Emmylou did a much better job singing this song than JB.They certainly added some extra energy to this lovely tune.

Jan 21, 2011 - WOW! First hearing of this version, it's freaking AWESOME! Better than Browne's by a long shot, and i love his song. Respect.

SH000FLY Says:

Jan 23, 2011 - Thanks Arlo!

Mar 7, 2011 - The song "For A Dancer" is about Scotty Runyon. He was a very talented dancing friend of Jackson's who was killed in a fire in the fall of 1973. Dancing was just one of his many accomplishments. Jackson even attended the funeral just days before his son Ethan Zane Browne was born. this was written and released before Jackson's 1st wife committed suicide, so it being about her death is impossible.

flairbird1965 Says:

May 2, 2011 - Not sure it's better, certainly every bit as good as Browne's version. A different, dancable interpretation of an excellent song.

Oct 8, 2011 - Some songs should not be covered. Has anyone heard this before. This is one of those songs and God help us, we don't need another cover in Country Western.. I happen to be a big fan of these ladies but this one just doesn't work. Very dissappointing....

luv4krista Says:

Oct 8, 2011 - This site only post positive comments apparently. You know the artistic types are a little sensitive. Ok fine.... but the original Jackson Browne song is not one of those songs that should be covered, let alone in the country western style. The ladies do a perfectly good job with it, but this just isn't the song to be covered. Just a lonely pilgrims view.

luv4krista Says:

Oct 8, 2011 - interesting country version of this song by two great ladies. I kind of like the more upbeat tempo compared to the original, but than the song is meant to be melancholy, given the somber subject matter; death and dying. Good job of making a sad song a little happier.

Oct 10, 2011 - the only comments i don't allow are h8 driven. unfortunately (or maybe fortunately!) i have been offline for a while and didn't have an opportunity to get to approve yours.

SH000FLY Says:

Oct 10, 2011 - this is the first version i ever heard, even though it was written and recorded long before. I was shopping in a store and heard it on the loudspeaker. It seemed striking to me. Then I bought the CD, called "Western Wall: The Tucson Sessions" and the entire album became like a piece of well worn fabric to me. All of the songs on the album are "covers" except I suppose, the ones written by Emmy Lou Harris.
