Although this is one of my favorite operas, I think that what this production has in opulence it lacks in emotion on the part of it's leading lady. I much prefer the Dessay/Villazon version.

Yes, by now he HAS performed the role many times, that night at the Met was either the first, or among the first. By his own admission in an interview from the ROH, dated 6/22/2009:" Des Grieux in Manon is another new direction for his voice, and one with which Vargas is particularly happy"
