Jan 23, 2011 - I agree Cantonese is one of the many LANGUAGES of China.but it's not a dialect of Mandarin. For a language to be internationally categorised as a dialect of another language they must have at leased 50% mutually intelligibility. Cantonese to Mandarin only has 35%! French to English has a mutual intelligibility of only 30%! Cantonese is a dialect of China for POLITICAL REASONS ONLY. Nothing more nothing less.

Jan 23, 2011 - Cantonese is a dialect of Chinese, not a dialect of Mandarin. Mandarin and Cantonese are both dialects, not standalone languages. Mandarin speakers might not understand my Cantonese, but they understand my writing. Does English speaker understand French writing if they never learnt French?
