Title: Chainsaw sculpture: making a stool from a log

Description:
http://peplers.blogspot.com/2008/12/making-stool.html This video shows you how to use a chainsaw to make a one-piece stool from a log, no nails, screws glue or joints required. It also doubles as a small saw bench! I can't claim to have invented this myself though, I learned it while doing chainsaw and tree felling training with David Rossney of Esus Forestry. Be warned, this guzzles fuel - I can get two stools made from one tank. It's also good to start with a sharp chain, as there's a lot of cutting to do.Obviously I need to say here that you shouldn't be using a chainsaw unless you've had some training, either from an official trainer or a forestry expert you happen to know. Also, you should have all the protective equipment - chainsaw trousers and boots, gloves, helmet, visor and ear defenders.Watch a timelapse video of making a stool here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTw0YRnMXtMHave fun making stools!

Feb 21, 2012 - Great! I think they're really useful bits of 'furniture' - I use them more as saw horses than for sitting on during the winter...

Apr 11, 2012 - Initially I said to myself, "way to dick that up". After I watched the whole thing I was amazed. What a friggin awesome idea!! Good job!! These would be perfect for around my firepit. I got some huge pines laying down after an ice storm a few years ago. I know what I'm doing this weekend..thanks!!

Apr 11, 2012 - I have designed more stools out of hard rock maple here in Nova Scotia, Canada. They all crack, but I am working on a design for a butterfly wedge to lock the cracks from growing. The logs that I use are from 200 +/- year old trees harvested locally. I have given some to friends, and my designs have evolved to where I use a squaring tool and bevel gauge. Many people cannot tell that it wasn't purchased.

Apr 11, 2012 - Have fun, they're very useful both as a stool and a mini saw-horse!

Apr 11, 2012 - Yes, I found some types of wood tend to split when made into these stools. Chestnut is my main material, but after 2-3 years it does split. Ash is better, but not as durable.

mikepepler Says:
May 15, 2012 - I'm using my 570 in this one. I've got a 346xp as well, which is better suited to making a stool as it's lighter.
