Title: Muay Thai Boran "Kata"

Added: Apr 27, 2010

Author: kolsyrade

Duration: 8:24

Description:
I upload this clip as visual aid for discussion purposes. Here are 2 "kata" from Muay thai Chaiyuth. A traditional and ancient form of Muay thai (Muay Boran) as taught by Thai living national treasure Chakraphob Charoenrat. In it you can also see many techniques normally sneered at by Muay thai practitioner when they are trained by other traditional arts like karate, kungfu or TKD, such as the high X-block.It is not called a kata since that is a Japanese word, but that it what it is in all but name. You get to see the single form practice and the 2-person application practice. It is not quite as formalized & ritualized as Japanese Kata, but you have to be blind not to see the relationship between the two training methods.

Dec 13, 2010 - OSU! I do Koei Kan which uses Naha ten and Shuri te. It is also very chinese connected to its roots of a form of Kung Fu. I see here how all the martial arts arerelated but differ idealistically like here the katas parry but at least in what I learned so far in koei kan's pinan katas throws are hidden every where.

Oct 3, 2011 - Does anyone know the Thai term for forms? I know kata is the more well-known term, but out of respect for the art I think it's better to use terms they would use.

jeff43881 Says:

Oct 4, 2011 - The Japanese word, kata, can be roughly translated as form, a kind of shadow boxing which applies karate techniques in a series of memorized patterns. But to those who really understand kata training know that there is much more to it than that.

FoieGras Says:

Oct 8, 2011 - From what I've seen here, starting with block and then retaliation, Muay Boran's tactics resemble more traditional martial arts like Kung Fu and Karate. Plus, with modern sports Muay Thai, roundhouses are thrown full circle (body spins around on toe unless it hits something solid). Here, the leg is retracted, much like a Karate Mawashigeri with the foot flat on the ground - less momentum, but more control.

jjhaywood Says:

Oct 16, 2011 - HOLY SHIT!! This looks like okinawan karate.

pajaritodelodio Says:

Feb 5, 2012 - i dissagre my friend, thailand never had conflicts with china, only with birmania, but you are right..using the vitla presuure pints of kung fu can easily beat a muay thai opponent, but if this opponent has knowledge of muay boran...kung fu is usless...
