Title: Elementary Productions: Bromine and Aluminum
Added: Feb 17, 2008
Author: mabakken
Duration: 1:34
Description:
Small lumps of Aluminum is added to elemental Bromine. The two starts reacting after a little activation period, forming solid Aluminum Bromide. The reaction is very exothermic, and I expected the Petri dish, in which the experiment is carried out, to burst.

Apr 7, 2009 - Ah, crap.I forgot Bromine was diatomic, thanks :p
SplinterCell521 Says:
Apr 11, 2009 - where can i get a whole bottle of bromine like that?
milotickz Says:
Apr 28, 2009 - Bromine is an acid as well, right?
DownUnderPyro Says:
May 15, 2009 - im curious what would happen if a finer aluminium such as powdered form would happen if added to the bromine?would the reaction happen faster or not at all?
lakzir Says:
May 30, 2009 - extremely as deadly? if i breath this in, i should plan my funeral?
dbc616 Says:
Jun 8, 2009 - It would probably happen faster, since there's more surface area for it to react with.
DownUnderPyro Says:
Jun 8, 2009 - yeah :D
pyropakman Says:
Aug 4, 2009 - Lewis acid.
pyropakman Says:
Aug 4, 2009 - Probably out of a high school catalog. You could also synthesize your own by bubbling chlorine gas through a saturated bromide salt solution, like NaBr or KBr.You can make chlorine by combining hydrochloric acid and either any hypochlorite (Clorox bleach is 6% NaClO) or Potassium Permanganate.
oobermate Says:
Oct 28, 2009 - Seeing as how Bromine over time will even eat through the glass of the container that it is kept in, yes i would plan my funeral. The halogens are gasses that you do not want to come into contact with.
douro20 Says:
Oct 30, 2009 - No because it is a halogen.
mclein1097 Says:
Nov 21, 2009 - Can I use aluminum foil?
Masalmeh321 Says:
Dec 8, 2009 - Yes, you can. It might take a little longer to react though.
Agentoxedo07 Says:
Dec 11, 2009 - Holy-Terrorist:> bromine = cancer !
olympicfan2 Says:
Jan 10, 2010 - you can make bromine with potassium or sodium bromide manganese dioxide and sulfuric acid 10 percent
olympicfan2 Says:
Jan 10, 2010 - yes, you can use aluminium foil!!!
supersaper3 Says:
May 30, 2010 - That's a watch glass not a petri dish.

Jul 5, 2010 - crazy!!!Are you try to kill yourself lol ?
EPICGUYDUDE Says:
Jul 6, 2010 - where is the aluminum bromide? is it the shiny stuff left over? the brown stain on the plate/dish?
misaluvakatsa Says:
Jul 29, 2010 - is the gas toxic...?
mewrox99 Says:
Sep 11, 2010 - Your not gonna get cancer from inhaling bromine a couple of times a year. It's only chronic exposureAnd your Holy-terrorist:> shit is annoying
pyro4869 Says:
Feb 5, 2011 - Isn't Bromine the stuff that can cause cancer and is highly flammable
4242bobby Says:
Oct 12, 2011 - damn it does look like the pits of hell
legonut021 Says:
Mar 14, 2012 - aluminium+bromine=hell in a bowl

GardenShedChemistry Says:
Apr 3, 2009 - This is incorrect. The correct stochiometric equation is3Br2 + 2Al --> 2AlBr3
