May 22, 2012 - actually if you do research africans held slaves but it was a different kind of slavery because these were sorta prisoners of war and could earn their freedom and live higher status lives. i think it was portuguese that were intrigued at first with the idea of slavery so they traded items Africans wanted. Portuguese and other countries liked what they saw and turned it into slavery people know and Africans kings liked European goods and raged war on neighboring tribes so they could sell them.
