May 12, 2012 - So, we have to be slaves to the groove? I don't agree. It's the audiences who are dumb. Great music isn't for everyone...and a great melodic solo is still great even if the groove is held back for a while...if there's still a melodic pulse in the music solo. Today audiences expect to be hit over the head with the music. Besides, I see people chat and ignore great musicians all the time at Jazz venues.

May 17, 2012 - you know it will be really interesting heard a groovy guitar solo, thats not very common nowadays, now is like shred as fuck
metalzombiebass Says:
May 17, 2012 - dude is just plain a simple, bass born from jazz,is a groove instrument, every knows that, i use to be like you i tried make it sound more melodic but it never work, why you try to impress the ones who already know about music if the ones who "doesnt know about music" are the ones who fill the sits of your gig?
Rexicano Says:
May 17, 2012 - Wow, so your God is money ...clear to see. Some people would rather be artists than entertainers. Why don't YOU just do your thing and stop trying to tell me this "every knows" nonsense. Maybe best to stay is school and learn simple sentence construction too because illiterate people have a hard time...especially giving Lectures about Jazz.

May 19, 2012 - i actually like bass solos.
sizzurps Says:
May 19, 2012 - I think you may be missing the message he's trying to convey. I interpret this more along the lines of "you can't stop grooving because you have a solo, you have to both groove AND solo at the same time". The last bit of the video seems to back this up. You should give his book The Music Lesson a look.

May 20, 2012 - That is the point....

May 20, 2012 - People just don't hear, or don't give a damn when the solo is played with lower notes..... It could be another reason. I think, if jaco pastorius had played solos exactly the same as he did, but with one octave higher, he might have been even more popular...

May 22, 2012 - i agree with his thought on solos and them breaking the groove, but that idea can applied to every other instrument in a band (guitar solo, drum solo...) they all break the groove. a guitar is all about melody, drums are all about rhythm and beat, but a bass is both of those in one! its part of the reason a bass solo (when done right) is the best type of solo you can get. its my favorite and anyone who doesnt like it simply doesnt understand much about music and/or has a poor taste.
MonkeyWiththeStick Says:
May 24, 2012 - Yeah, but Entwistle always held the groove of the song. In the solo for My Generation or 5:15, he played some really rocking stuff, but it was always still in the grove of the song.
