Jun 14, 2010 - John Mclaughlin does a pulloff for the F on 3:18 !The 16th notes are all alternate picked starting with a downstroke. The 8ths mainly with downstrokes, sometimes with alternate picking.Rarely changes to a lower string with an upstroke. If someone knows more about he's picking, please send me a message.

Dec 7, 2010 - From what I've read and seen, JM's picking style is called Sarod style picking...which he learned from sarod musicians in India.

May 12, 2011 - At bar 42 he ties the note over the bar to displace beat one .This is a favorite phrasing trick of mine. Starting everything on 1 in a bar is very boring.

Jul 15, 2011 - Frank Zappa called this "The Carlos Santana Secret Chord Progression".
ibanezbloke Says:
Aug 11, 2011 - No he didn't. The Carlos Santana Secret Chord Progression was Am7 to D9 - it's dorian, not Major.
emeraldomusik Says:
Aug 22, 2011 - sorry man ! on 3:18 there is no pulloff and there is no F. He simply plays a Cmajor triad like this e-g-c-c-c.....

Sep 24, 2011 - It really sounds like Let Us Go Into The House Of The Lord. Wonderful!

May 6, 2012 - why is mixolydian being played over the F....we could play the lydian mode with a C at the base also...really confused..!!
AJLeaver Says:
May 8, 2012 - It's actually a G11 chord, but it can be called Fmaj7/G. Same chord, different name. And you could play Lydian over the C but I think John's keeping it simple. Hope that helps :)
Reanimatorhead Says:
May 9, 2012 - yeah ur right....thanx its G11 so mixolydian is the scale of choice here...the Fmaj scale also works...u could also add some passing tones or the 7th.
