Apr 2, 2012 - interesting take on this and i like it but i think that david gates was siting under a tree one day and in an artistic mood he wrote this song and made up a story just like it says in the song and then he sold it for good money and music culture knowing that it would sell (just like all his other songs) and people would like it and make it a hit.the thing about this song is that people do not leave diaries underneath trees maybe once as in forgot but not over and over again so mayb your right

He just misinterpreted it and thought it was him she was writing about in the beginning..only to find out as he continued to read (after "she confronted with her writing there") that the love she'd waited for was someone else not him in the end. That's why the verses are in past tense and the chorus is in the future tense..what he will give when he thinks it is him, and then what he wishes when he finds out it's not.
