Title: "On Raglan Road" by Patrick Kavanagh (poetry reading)
Added: Apr 7, 2010
Author: SpokenVerse
Duration: 1:45
Description:
This poem was first published in 1946 with the title "Dark Haired Miriam Ran Away" It refers to a girlfriend but she wasn't called Miriam. The poem's now much better known as a song called "On Raglan Road" Many years later, Luke Kelly of The Dubliners, who was 5 years old when the poem was written, first sang it to an old Irish tune, "The Dawning of the Day" I deliberately didn't listen to him before recording it - and his phrasing is quite different from mine:http://www.youtube.com/watch#!v=gehGvW-RIkUPatrick Kavanaugh's statue is sitting on a bench by The Grand Canal. Here's a link to a discussion about the poem at The MudCar Cafe:http://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=43818On Raglan Road on an autumn day I met her first and knew That her dark hair would weave a snare that I might one day rue; I saw the danger, yet I walked along the enchanted way, And I said, let grief be a fallen leaf at the dawning of the day. On Grafton Street in November we tripped lightly along the ledge Of the deep ravine where can be seen the worth of passion's pledge, The Queen of Hearts still making tarts and I not making hay - O I loved too much and by such and such is happiness thrown away. I gave her gifts of the mind I gave her the secret sign that's known To the artists who have known the true gods of sound and stone And word and tint. I did not stint for I gave her poems to say. With her own name there and her own dark hair like clouds over fields of May On a quiet street where old ghosts meet I see her walking now Away from me so hurriedly my reason must allow That I had wooed not as I should a creature made of clay - When the angel woos the clay he'd lose his wings at the dawn of day.

Apr 12, 2010 - This is great, Kavanagh is on my Leaving Certificate course so this will be good to listen to. Could you possibly do a reading of Inniskeen Road as well? That's another that is on my course and my favourite by him. Thank you.

May 23, 2010 - Okay, I'll tell you why. During these silences I can display a still picture to use as the thumbnail. YouTube give a choice of three and they have to persist for some time. Also leaving four seconds silence at the beginning gives time for your buffer to fill. Otherwise there's likely to be an unintended gap after the reading starts. I don't know of any other fix for these problems.

Nov 3, 2011 - The Dubliners got together with Patrick Kavanagh ther poet shortly before he died and suggested giving an air to this poem that they would record. They came up with an old Irish Marching song "The Dawning of the Day". Of Course they slowed the march down and this was the result. Many other Artists have recorded it...Siobhan O'Connor etc. it was a rousing success.

Dec 15, 2011 - Actually "The Dawning of the Day" was a song kavanagh grew up listening to, when he first wrote "On Raglan Road" he purposely wrote it to the air of "The Dawning of the Day" Luke kelly just happened to be the first to sing it, he had nothing to do with with setting it to "The dawning of the day" That was kavanagh when he first wrote it.

Dec 15, 2011 - I know, however, The Dawning of the Day has being played forever by the Number One Army Band(Irish Army) and in Croke Park by the Artane Boys Band, in a military quickstep. It would never go over being played slow in a marching parade. The words of the original can be found somewhere..
