I suppose you'd say that "Bold as Love", "Crossroads" or "Kid A" are only known because John Mayer did them too, when those three songs are actually on studio albums. This song was a huge hit for Tom Petty in 1989-90, and is still regularly played on the radio, and is very, very well-known WITHOUT John Mayer's vomit all over it.

Originals will always be better, but John Mayer did nothing but give the song more popularity and his own version. He has a much softer approach, and some people like that. I personally have both on my iPod..
