May 26, 2012 - I'm told that they're structurally identical, but that a "fiddle" and a classical violin are made of different woods when they're put together to give them different tones from each other. The sounding boards and fretboards and such in a violin are made of... spruce? and that they're maple in a fiddle, and that the difference is so that the style of sounds from fiddlers and violinists will sound better on their individual instruments.

May 26, 2012 - All violins are made differently. It is a very common misconception. My father is a professional fiddle player. Check him out on itunes Tim Smith. People who fiddle usually adjust the Violin set up different than that of a classical player. For example, fiddle players tend to make the bridge flatter making it easier to bow more than one string at a time. My dad has a French violin from the 18th century as well as a german violin that were most likely played by classically trained players.
