Zappa has restored it for about 20 musicians - personally I don't think it's as good as Ravel's version but to say that Zappa is only waving his baton is just showing a complete ignorance of what a composer and an arranger (and even a conductor) does.

Although it's narrowminded, I can't blame them.I heard Ravel's version a hundred times, and it's insane to compare both versions. Because it has nothing to do with it. All I said was Zappa's band is giving a great performance, but Zappa's getting the credit. And he was not the composer nor arranger. But once again, I don't blame them.

Yes, Ravel did famously orchestrate "Pictures at an Exhibition" in 1922, and he did orchestrate many of his own piano works as well as some of Debussy's, but otherwise he was a promnent and fairly prolific composer in most genres.
