Dec 4, 2007 - How about a Buy Nothing Holiday Season?
toolshed333 Says:
Mar 24, 2008 - Yeaaaaah...Unemployment Day.
dyosha Says:
Mar 24, 2008 - I'm not sure I know what you mean. Please explain.
toolshed333 Says:
Mar 31, 2008 - If consumption permanently stopped, nobody would have a job. Although consumption may be excessive, it would not be a good thing to have consumption totally removed from our lives. This day is also a little silly in my opinion, as people could just buy more on the days surrounding buy nothing day.
pegginpett Says:
Jul 25, 2008 - I am going to buy $100 worth of stuff today and burn it. Why? Because I can...and also so that someone in our glorious society can make a buck.
dyosha Says:
Jul 25, 2008 - I think you missed the point. It's symbolic. We need to move our economy to a more sustainable one or no one will be working, buying things or perhaps breathing. But, hell, let the next two generations worry about that. Drink up!
pegginpett Says:
Jul 25, 2008 - Oh, I understand the point totally. You are just some activist, like so many others of your kind are missing the point of activist. If you have such a big problem with our society and our economy, then get off you ass, go to school, and become a politician and actually change something. You know, instead of sitting in parks playing your guitar or congesting traffic with one of your lame ass demonstrations. By the way, I don't drink.
dyosha Says:
Jul 25, 2008 - While I agree that some people should work within the system, not everyone can. Activism is also about everyone doing their part to change the things within their power. Buy Nothing Day is about self examination. It won't stop overconsumerism but it does remind us that we are both the problem and the solution. BTW, I'm long out of school and have been working for over 25 years, so I doubt I'm going to start a new career as a politician. I do, however, play the guitar but rarely in parks!
FunnyDigestion Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - Which came first, the employment model or the consumption model? If you look at American history, it was the employment model (long hours doing crappy shit) that developed first, and the consumption levels fitted to it. High employment isn't GOOD if the EMPLOYMENT is BAD, heh. And in America a lot of it is. Crime rates reflect that.
FunnyDigestion Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - Western Europe by most measurements has much less poverty than America (in relative and absolute terms) despite having more unemployment. Because their governments understand that people shouldn't HAVE to flip burgers 10 hours a day in order to survive...
toolshed333 Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - Awe your so cute. Your trying to sound like an economist. Most American's don't flip burgers all day, and most American's have higher salaries than Europeans. Also most economists today are supply side economists, not "employment" or "consumption" economists which I've never heard of. Western Europe is sad...double digit unemployment, low growth, etc. Better watch out before eastern Europe, Asia, and the middle east run over the west, because of growing economic freedom.
pegginpett Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - I am glad you agree with me on the fact that people need to work for change. It is in my experience with demonstrators that they think waving a banner and singing songs about bringing down the system will actually change something, which it will not.
FunnyDigestion Says:
Jul 27, 2008 - "Awe" "your" so cute. You're trying to insult me but you can't figure out how grammar works.'Supply-side' = Reagan; most economists who don't write for idiot publications like The Economist or the WSJ tend to dispute Reagan. The bottom line is that more Americans than West Europeans have trouble making ends meet; try getting out of Ayn-Rand/Ludwig-Von-Mises World and seeing how real people live.
toolshed333 Says:
Jul 28, 2008 - You obviously don't know many economists personally. You'll have to excuse me for not having perfect grammar on youtube of all places lol. Get over yourself.P.S. why do you assume that America is a free market? It is socialist/fascist/capitalist...its called a mixed economy lol and its pathetic. The bottom line is that more Americans have jobs than Western Europeans. Europeans are heading toward socialist Nazi policies. Disgusting.
toolshed333 Says:
Jul 28, 2008 - P.S. I think by "most economists...tend to dispute Reagan" you mean most journalists, who are not economists.
krissy4nik Says:
Mar 6, 2009 - Alot of people find political and social issues boring because of the intellectual masturbation that goes on in discussions(hint). What I like about adbusters is they put it in simple terms that don't drag on. It's a common sense approach.

Virtuesse09 Says:
May 17, 2012 - I am going to school at the University of Washington and while working with youth in civic engagement I have sworn to myself to get the MONEY out of our politics because it has bankrupted our whole democracy for the sake of growth inspired by making more crap and more consumers who think they need it. If we can't even make sure that we have a democracy that stands for citizen then we all are missing the point and you don't need to be a lawyer to be an effective citizen. That's just more lies.
