May 4, 2012 - I was thinking that, but that the boy when he was younger represented animals and how they don't misuse mother nature, and then when he grew up it represented humans and how they do, you know, since child comes before adult, animals came before people.

May 5, 2012 - Well that is pretty good theory, never heard that one before.I always thought it was about self-sacrifice and greed, like a relationship between a parent and its child.

May 6, 2012 - I came across this story in my mom's old bookshelf of books from her childhood, and I looked it up after I read it. I found this and I must say, it is beautiful. It might seem strange coming from somebody my age of 10, because most people think kids take advantage of everything, and use them for pointless things... I have to admit I do that, but I do enjoy looking back on older stories, where it actually told a lesson that could be used in life, rather than a pointless video game. To me, even t

May 7, 2012 - To be honest I'd forgotten the beauty of this poem. As a boy it brought tears to my eye the first time I heard it read to me and wondered at the nature of the tree. Now as a man nearly twenty years later, the tree is still as beautiful in nature. But the boy I can understand and wonder how I didn't learn from his mistakes better.

May 20, 2012 - I'm aware of the debates over this book, and both sides have a point.I can see this as a cautionary tale if we look at this as the boy's story instead of the tree's. If you look closely, the boy never seems truly happy as he gets older (especially as a middle-aged man, wanting to escape and sail away because he's "too old and sad to play". So you could read this as saying "do nothing but take and you'll never be really content."
Jennifer Schillig Says:
May 20, 2012 - Plus, I might also add that in the end, the man is finally ready to give the tree the only thing she's ever asked of him--companionship. So you could see it as his lesson being learned at last.

May 25, 2012 - I don't know what made me think of this today. Some brain cell deep in my brain must of got triggered off and it came into my memory. So I come to YouTube and find it. It's been almost 40 years since I have seen this my one and only time in Kindergarten or the first grade. It's amazing how much of the dialogue I remembered. Thanks for posting this.
