Title: John Taylor Gatto on Compulsary Education and Permanent Childhood
Added: Dec 15, 2010
Author: Santarchy
Duration: 85:41
Description:
This was a rare talk I captured from an old audio cassette I got from a friend. The audio is mediocre but the talk is great so I thought I'd share.John Taylor Gatto was a teacher in New York city public schools for 30 years and was the winner New York City Teacher of the Year on three occasions. He has become an outspoken critic of the compulsory American education system and has some thought provoking things to say."There was not a single day that I went to work as a school teacher...when I did not have a clear intention...to wreak some harm to forced institutional schooling." -John Taylor Gattowww.johntaylorgatto.comIf you enjoy this talk I also recommend watching the documentary film "A Touch of Greatness" about Albert Cullum.

Feb 28, 2012 - Good talk, but the Darwin stuff is nonsense.
HadasahMiryam Says:
Mar 24, 2012 - I agree that the Darwin stuff is BS, but wow over all this is a great speech~! When the Native aka First Nations children came back home from residential schools, their parents complained the children didn't learn anything useful. They couldn't hunt or fish or even put up a simple shelter~! They didn't know how to do the most basic things for survival and they considered all their children "ruined" and unfit to marry off.

Apr 14, 2012 - it's too bad in Ottawa, where many people home-school, it's a social club, very exclusive, and some people use homeschooling as a way to hyper control their children's information, to prevent them from thinking for themselves. THATS not what homeschooling is supposed to be about.

Apr 19, 2012 - The Darwin cultists will hate his opinion of the Eugenicist Darwin. Its too mind blowing to know that Darwin thought that the Irish were the lowest of the low.
thorell9 Says:
Apr 25, 2012 - It's possible that Darwin be right about reproduction with variation and wrong about the Irish. Most people were pretty racist back then. Evolutionary theory has progressed significantly since Darwin, though, so you can discount Darwin all you like without touching the theory.
