And as a grade 3 teacher in a school with many socioeconomically disadvantaged students.....I make them a snack or a lunch when they have none, I make them believe in themselves and that they CAN do it, I make them laugh, I make them feel safe, and I make sure that they know that I care about each and every one of them. I keep the bar high and I do everything to help them to reach it.

The fact that teachers do not generate income equal to doctors, lawyers, etc. means nothing other than we owe them much more respect and thanks for taking on the task of educating our kids.

Apr 19, 2012 - you know why i'm going to comment on this despite my distain? because just as taylor states in the poem, we must criticize. i have grown up in public school, it wasn't until my sophomore year in high school that i decided the system was so corrupt - i switched to private school. and you know what i've realized? private school teachers are the ones that make differences. their salary is NOTHING compared to public and the don't enjoy the union perks. they aren't condescending assholes either.
