How to Train Grape Vines

Dec 1, 2010 - This is a non-traditional trellis. It isn't ment for optimal performance. We want a "wall" of vine and fruit effect to hide the house and neighbors fence. Thus the shape of the trellis.As far as where we will place the second row, it will be along the second wire. But we are planning on allowing a strong vine to grow accross the top 2x4 and cascade down the 2 uprights.These we will prune for look. The wires will be pruned for fruit.

May 3, 2011 - You will need to wait for a new growing tip to apear near the main stem you cut. Then tie it in the directions you wish it to grow. Keep other shoots trimed past the new growing tip so all the energy is focused on the new shoot.This may not happen until the following year.

May 5, 2011 - As you can judge, I had not trained my grape vine initially, mainly because I had NO idea that grapevines needed this special treatment when I bought it. So the plant grew naturally for about a couple of years or more ( no fruits). Even when I started to read up, all the information that appeared online about pruning was so confusing (spur pruning/cane pruning etc). Anyway, what I have now as the main stem (about a ft above ground and about 2-3 in. thick), and 2 branches off of it.

May 5, 2011 - now these 2 branches are directed side ways and are in no way like your main vertical branch. In fact, one of the branches is now growing diaganolly (not horizontally, not vertical). This branch is thick now and I fear I will break it if I were to straighten it up to train it as my vertical branch. So, back to the original q, when u say I need to wait for a new growing tip, do you mean a new growing from one of these branch or a growing tip from the main stem? Thank you so much for your help.

Nov 8, 2011 - Concord, and for only being a 2nd year fruit, they were very yummy!No idea what kniffen method is, sorry. Just pruneing for a "wall" effect that will also bear fruit to hide some urban landscape. :)

Nov 8, 2011 - Our yard space is very limited and the 3 we have planted is more then enough for our use. But propagation works great with any vine. We propagated our tomatoes in another video series.

The information on how to encourage new laterals wasn't covered in the other videos even though they may have been doing it it wasn't discussed. I just planted a Zinfandel to learn how to cultivate grapes. Thanks for the video.
