May 27, 2011 - I think free climbing came about in the very early 80's possibly late 70's (not sure) but before free climbing there was aid climbing which is basically hanging of the gear using hammers etc to ascent.. this went on to only using natural features of the rock to climb and only place gear to save you if you fall.- free-climbing

Oct 1, 2011 - This is a common misunderstanding. Free Solo means no rope. Free climbing means the climber only pulls on or stands on the rock. But he/she is allowed to protect with a rope and various devices that secure the rope to the rock. It just can't be used to help hold you or move you up the rock.
