The part of the play which relates to this song is when Faust, frustrated by his limited learning calls the Devil (Mephistopheles) for unlimited knowledge and power, in exchange for his soul at the moment he attains the zenith of human happiness. Faust agrees with this deal, as he reckons that moment will never come. Sadly, he was wrong.
