May 4, 2012 - This was Levon's best performance of this song IMO. His emotion really came out this night and we could hear it in his voice. RIP my brother Levon.

May 14, 2012 - I can't believe he was only rated as the #91 greatest singer of all time in Rolling Stone. To me he is one of the top 10 greatest vocalists in Rock & Roll history. That raw country drawl and powerful emotional voice are incredible. This song brings a tear to my eye purely from the emotion in Levons voice. RIP

May 19, 2012 - This one is much better than the studioversion, this one's got something extra, the way he goes up when he sings, just amazing. Gives me the chills everytime.

May 23, 2012 - Ohhhh Mr. Helm... You were FANTASTIC!
wolfwilliams Says:
May 24, 2012 - Exactly! And I've always thought Levon knew this was the last time he was ever going to sing this song, and he poured everything into it. (Conflicting reports say he sang it a few more times live, but most say he refused to sing it after this.) He wasn't happy about this concert or the movie; I think his anger and real emotional pain bubbled up in this song. And he was a southern boy. (There's a story about a line in the song, referring to Lincoln, that Helm had Robertson take out early on.)

May 3, 2012 - That this song was written by a Jewish, Mohawk Indian, Canadian, not an actual Southerner, (or so I've been told) moves me as much as the song itself.
