Title: Janis Ian - Society's Child

Added: Jan 6, 2010

Author: Condestruction

Duration: 3:15

Description:
Ian's first release tells the sad tale of a young, interracial couple who must face the ridicule and hostility of society; very controversial subject matter in the 60's!Lyrics:Come to my door, baby,Face is clean and shining black as night. My mother went to answer you knowThat you looked so fine. Now I could understand your tears and your shame,She called you "boy" instead of your name. When she wouldn't let you inside,When she turned and said"But honey, he's not our kind."She saysI can't see you any more, baby,Can't see you anymore.Walk me down to school, baby,Everybody's acting deaf and blind.Until they turn and say, "Why don't you stick to your own kind."My teachers all laugh, the smirking stares,Cutting deep down in our affairs.Preachers of equality,Think they believe it, then why won't they just let us be?They say I can't see you anymore baby,Can't see you anymore. One of these days I'm gonna stop my listeningGonna raise my head up high. One of these days I'm gonna raise up my glistening wings and fly.But that day will have to wait for a while.Baby I'm only society's child. When we're older things may change,But for now this is the way, they must remain.I say I can't see you anymore baby,Can't see you anymore. No, I don't want to see you anymore, baby.

Jan 8, 2012 - It's very hard to be married to the same color and even if you both believe in God Who created the heavens and the earth and all thay is in the of the own kind not alone being married totaly out of you relam, you people need to get real and try being married most of you have not been there or you would know and not be writing such stupid comments like I see here. joe

FLSHBK1 Says:

Jan 15, 2012 - How do you figure I have a problem with her heritage??? I was responding to others who asserted her song referred to her "lesbianism" or to her "interracial parents", neither of which is true. "SADLY", you seem to have a problem with Reading Comprehension. And BTW, I've been listening to the song since 1965, thank you very much. Perhaps you should kiss off.

Jan 17, 2012 - I agree. The term and perception of "race" is a social construct. To be quite specific, it is not even a scientifically accepted classification among humans; It hasn't been for a very long time ('no taxonomic significance'). There is only a single race, the human race. It is a shame that many people are still ignorant of that fact! Much like the narrator's mother and peers in this song.

Texfield91 Says:

Feb 22, 2012 - It's about a forbidden interracial realtionship

adelgado75 Says:

Mar 5, 2012 - And yet they still use it as a way of separating people. I once said to a White supervisor (I'm Puerto Rican) that there was only once race of people, human, and she took a puff of an imaginary joint and made the peace sign. I guess she was making the point that that belief of 'one race' is something that came out of the sixties.

brainsareus Says:

Apr 7, 2012 - i hear ya, but then again, she is no more "white" than you are just boricua, or a person of color[or not]. those are artificial constructs, created by people with a need to call themselves white, so as to be able to justify screwing over others.

spideraxis Says:

Apr 15, 2012 - Who is Janis Ian fooling? A liberal, left-wing Jew, like all of them - they make sure their neighborhoods and developments stay all-Jewish, restrict the number of non-Whites, draw district and school lines to keep the "schwartzes" out, and are the first to run out when Blacks move in. Their politics are meant to be forced on others, not themselves. Integrate someone else's town, school, district - not theirs.

spideraxis Says:

Apr 15, 2012 - There is more than one race. I've had to deal endlessly with the criticism, ridicule and blame Blacks level against Whites. Teaching about racial tolerance is not to be directed at Whites only - Blacks and Hispanics need it also. Racism comes from all sources. It works all ways, not just one.

Juliaflo Says:

Apr 21, 2012 - I saw that very documentary with Janis and Maestro Bernstein (both of whom I know and have worked with, incidentally).

thadmotor Says:

Apr 21, 2012 - awesome , this song still topical and song transend time . killer organ closes out this great song ...

MrPoupard Says:

Apr 23, 2012 - Lucky you! Given that in 1967 Bernstein could have had really no idea of the iconic status that this particular song m by an unknown 15 year old, would develop it's a powerful indication of his innate musicianship that he chose to highlight it all those years ago brcause with the benefit of 45 years perfect hindsight WE can look back and see that his choice demonstrated a degree of accurate musical foresight almost bordering on clairvoyance.

Juliaflo Says:

Apr 24, 2012 - To think that on June 12 of that year, the Supreme Court unanimously overturned the last of those statutes. A few months later, the movie 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner' was released.

JoeMC7 Says:

Apr 30, 2012 - No, that was her way of saying she had no beef with you.

JoeMC7 Says:

Apr 30, 2012 - I had this on 45 vinyl for many years. Now why did I sell all my 45s at a yard sale?? Oh well. I want this one back though, but it will be an original.

wickedfeylady Says:

May 3, 2012 - I love this song and the msg it gives: society's judgment can tear people apart and break hearts if you let it. Me and my boyfriend, twice my age, are facing this now. I am 24 and not a child.

elvispresley718 Says:
