May 21, 2012 - id say the darwinian explanation for doing good towards strangers comes from our evolved ability to identify with the human race, and by extention, life on earth. the explanation for close relatives is obvious: our own genes are manifested in our children. they recieve the most consideration. in a darwinian context, some have now developed to capacity to identify with distant evolutionary cousins eg strangers, animals etc, as being somehow part of themselves. its comes back to the selfish gene.

I might learn something from it, or the dude might join my plight or do something that benefits me in return. A fellow member of our species is not necessarily a stranger in ever sense. We similarily identify with fellow members of our race for the same reasons. Being nice to an alien? THAT could be a misfire.

I am a howling atheist but I still feel the need to help people how may be down and out. I have come within a couple of months of that so how can my empathy for them not matter?

Jesus even got his idea of the final judgment from John the Baptist, who in turn got it from the Essenes, a Jewish end-of-days order. Nothing terribly special about Jesus. Sorry.
