Follow these steps to get a beautiful, long-lasting finish. To complete this How-To you will need: Work space Newspaper Sandpaper Tack cloth Varnish Mineral spirits Container Brush Step 1: Prepare your workspace If you're inside, make sure your work space is well ventilated and free of dust. Lay down newspaper to protect the floors. If working outdoors, choose a spot where wind will not blow dust and debris onto your freshly varnished surface. Step 2: Prepare your surface Give the wood a light sanding with very fine grained sandpaper. Sand with the grain of the wood, not against it. Wipe the wood clean with tack cloth. Tip: Lay pieces flat to avoid runs in the finish. Step 3: Use the right varnish. Step 4: Thin the varnish Thin the varnish by mixing with an equal part mineral spirits in your container. Thinning ensures a hard cure. Step 5: Apply the first coat Apply the varnish against the grain to a small area. Immediately go over the same area again with the brush, this time with the grain, and repeat over the whole piece. The first coat acts as a sealer. Tip: Do not ...

Liquitex Varnish
There are many misconceptions about whether or not it is necessary to varnish an acrylic painting. Liquitex resident artist Jimmy Leslie explains that as a general rule, you should always varnish your acrylic work when possible. Varnishes are applied over dry paint films and have several purposes. The first and most important function is to protect the painting surface from the environment and protect the pigments from ultraviolet light. Secondly, varnishes can be used to change or unify a paintings surface sheen. Liquitex varnishes come in several different sheens, which can all be intermixed for a customized sheen. Liquitex varnishes are either permanent or removable and can be applied to both flexible and rigid supports.

In this video, we will be explaining the difference between a traditional lacquer and a conversion varnish. To the untrained eye, both finishes look identical. A lacquer is a single-component, pre-catalyzed, nitro-celluloid finish that has 12-18% solids by volume. It is air-cured. A conversion varnish is a high-end solids, two-part post-catalyzed lacquer, which means a hardener must be mixed with this product for the application. Conversion varnish is 40-60% solids by volume and is chemical-cured. Most lacquers cost $25/gallon. Most conversion varnishes are $60-80/gallon. It takes a greater mechanical aptitude to apply a conversion varnish properly. I'm Charles, and I'm getting ready to spray conversion varnish on this piece of walnut. A conversion varnish has twice the dry film thickness as a lacquer. Conversion varnish is more durable and slightly more elastic than a lacquer. This elasticity is an advantage for wood joint expansion.

Using a Heatgun to Remove Varnish from an Old Wooden Boat
This is my first attempt at using a heat gun to remove varnish from an old wooden boat. It is a Chicago heat gun from Harbor freight. The temp is around 1000 degrees. I found that using the chisel across the grain worked better than going with the grain. When I scraped with the grain there were places where the grain lifted. As you can see it makes quick work of what would normal be a tough job.
Building Varnish on Transom
www.townsendboatworks.com This is me sanding and varnishing the transom of a 1955 29' Chris Craft Semi Enclosed. The Transom was stripped of the old varnish. All the bungs were removed above the waterline and the transom was refastened. It was then bunged, rough sanded and finished sanded in line with 80 grit sandpaper. I then stained it and applied 2 coats of Interlux 1026 wood sealer and 2 coats of Interlux Schooner varnish. This transom is scheduled to have at least 8 coats of varnish applied to it. This is the varnish "build up" process. This is the 3rd coat of varnish.
