US soldier kills Afghan civilians in shooting rampage
www.euronews.com A number of Afghan families are in mourning after a US soldier killed at least 16 civilians in a night-time shooting spree. Women, children and elderly men are among the dead. The man left his base in Kandahar province and entered people's homes in the early hours, apparently shooting people at random. One reporter for the AFP news agency said he saw the bodies of ten people in one house alone, adding that they had been burned. Another five people were reportedly wounded. NATO is investigating what it calls the 'deeply regrettable incident'. The soldier is said to have suffered a breakdown before the attack. "All we know so far is that he left the base, he returned to the base after the incident, was taken into custody straightaway and the investigation is ongoing, which will include what was the reasoning and what were the circumstances of his doings," said General Carsten Jacobson, a spokesman for a NATO-led ISAF coalition in Afghanistan. Anti-American feeling is already high after US soldiers burned a copy of the Koran last month, triggering widespread protests. Repeated apologies from US officials failed to prevent reprisals. There are fears of possible reprisal attacks in Afghanistan, after a US soldier went on a deadly shooting spree. The attack took place in two villages of Kandahar's Panjwai district, with the serviceman going from house to house as he opened fire. Sixteen civilians, including women and children, were killed. Barack Obama, the US president, has expressed his deep sadness, and has offered his condolences to the families of the victims. In April 2011 we were transferred to Colorado Springs, CC, and unfortunately my husband got sent on his 2nd year-long deployment in 2 years; this time to Afghanistan. Naturally we were all very bummed and on June 8th, 2011, he deployed. In August, my husband called and said it looked like he would be home mid September for leave. I immediately called my father-in-law and asked if there was some way we could still plan that surprise party, with Jeremy as the surprise. Being an army wife, I know never to expect dates to stay the same, so I was worried that he might not be able to make it. My mother-in-law works for a judge at the Orange County Court House, so my father-in-law called him to ask if there was something we could set up at her work. My husband flew in Sept 20th, and her birthday was the 22nd. I actually speak to my mother-in-law on a daily basis, and she was so completely bummed that neither of us would be able to be with her on her big 5-0. On the day before her birthday, I called her to say that I had sent her package a few days before and hopefully it would be there tomorrow, but that I would be at work the next day and wouldn't be able to call her until later that night. Yudh Abhyas is an annual exercise between the Indian and US armies. Yudh Abhyas 2012 took place in Mahajan training range, Rajasthan, India 70km from the Pakistan border. This is a short trailer showing some of the events of the military exercise. The units that took part were from US Army Pacific (USARPAC) including the A troop 2-14 Cav 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division from Schofield Barracks, Hawaii and the 6th Engineer Battalion (Airborne), 2nd Engineer Brigade out of Ft.
