PJ Crowley - WikiLeaks, one year later.
Wikileaks recently released 250000 unedited US diplomatic cables, creating yet another internet and diplomaticsensation of enormous consequence to US military members, diplomats, Foreign Service professionals, and the media. Philip J. (PJ) Crowley, will present "Wikileaks: One Year Later," at Penn State Law in Carlisle on October 25. "We can do more to improve transparency so that government is fully accountable to an informed citizenry. But fewer secrets does not mean no secrets. And the wholesale release of 250000 documents, many rightly classified, has done damage to the US national interest," according to Crowley. He added that, "We have to learn and apply the right lessons as we work through the implications of the convergence of policy, information and technology represented by WikiLeaks." Crowley's talk will focus on the national security, diplomatic, and media impacts of WikiLeaks. He is the 2011-2012 General Omar N. Bradley Chair of Strategic Leadership, a joint effort among Penn State, Center for Global Studies, Dickinson College, and the US Army War College to promote the exploration of leadership issues and military-civilian interaction. He teaches at all three institutions. Crowley's research and teaching interests focus on national security policy, public diplomacy, and the impact of the global media environment on conflict, policy, and politics. 'Diplomatic 9/11': WikiLeaks presents 'Cablegate'
The inner workings of US diplomacy are being put on display for the world to see, thanks to whistleblower website, Wikileaks. Thousands of communiques reveal often damning opinions on host countries, including close allies. Ballistic Peace: Diplomacy of Defence
Long-running negotiations between Russia and USA about NATO's European missile defence shield are currently deadlocked. Both countries want to protect their people by operating early warning radar stations, but have been unable to find a way to cooperate on the issue. NATO's top brass decided to deploy a missile defence system aimed at protecting Europe, but their plan to place it in former Warsaw Pact countries right on Russia's border raised the alarm in Moscow, leading it to consider countermeasures. So the reset in US-Russia relations announced by Washington and supported by Moscow is in now jeopardy. Find out more about this critical issue on RT. 'Obama diplomacy looking for excuse to attack Iran legally'
Iran is warning that any talks on its nuclear programme will fail if the West continues to hit it with sanctions. International leaders have agreed to restart the international negotiations, which have stalled for over a year. As well as the talks, Tehran's agreeing to let UN inspectors inside a military facility that's suspected of atomic weapons work, in efforts to prove its nuclear programme is peaceful. US President Barack Obama says he hopes the new talks will help silence Washington's hawkish voices. But there are worrying reports from an ex-Israeli intelligence officer, that Tel Aviv won't rely on diplomacy for much longer. Global affairs researcher Benjamin Schett believes the US could also be waiting for an excuse to attack. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

War Addicts: Iran next on US attack list?

Build up to WW3 - ISRAEL Driving US to WAR with IRAN (NWO, ILLUMINATI, ZION AGENDA)
Build up to WW3 - ISRAEL Driving US to WAR with IRAN (NWO, ILLUMINATI, ZION AGENDA) Israel will decide for itself whether to strike Iran, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Barack Obama. The US President is stressing the need to find a diplomatic resolution to the issue of Iran's nuclear program. The two leaders met Monday in the White House ahead of Netanyahu's speech later today before the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Israel fears Iran is seeking to develop an atomic bomb, although Tehran insists its nuclear plans are strictly civilian. "Israel must reserve the right to defend itself and after all, that's the very purpose of the Jewish state, to restore to the Jewish people control of our destiny," Netanyahu told Obama while the two leaders were seated in the Oval Office. Netanyahu pushed back against the Obama administration's repeated attempts to dissuade Israel from attacking Iran. "My supreme responsibility as Prime Minister of Israel is to ensure that Israel remains the master of its fate," he told Obama. On Sunday, Obama told the AIPAC conference in Washington that the US "will not hesitate" to use force to stop Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. "I have a policy to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon," he said. "And as I've made clear time and again during the course of my presidency, I will not hesitate to use force when it is necessary to defend the United States and its interests." However, the US President stressed ...

US & Britain Warns ISRAEL not to ATTACK IRAN Nuclear Facilities. IS ISRAEL UNSTOPPABLE?
The US and Britain are urging Israel not to attack Iran's nuclear sites. The countries' top officials believe a strike would be 'unwise' and it will not halt the Iranian nuclear program. US military officials are not fully convinced that Iran is gearing towards creating nuclear weapons, the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, explained in an interview to CNN. "On that basis, it would be premature to exclusively decide that the time for a military option was upon us," he said. According to Dempsey, US authorities believe an Israeli strike on Iran would not halt the Iranian nuclear program but will only delay it temporarily. He estimates the delay would last "probably a couple of years, but some of the targets are probably beyond their [Israelis'] reach." Martin Dempsey added that Israelis themselves are well aware a strike now could not be efficient. "I'm confident that they understand our concerns, that a strike at this time would be destabilizing and wouldn't achieve their long-term objectives," he said. Dempsey suggested the West had to be better-prepared for a possible military confrontation with Iran. "I mean, fundamentally, we have to be prepared," he said. "And that includes, for the most part, at this point, being prepared defensively." Analysts, who talked to RT, said Martin Dempsey was right saying that Israeli military action against Iran is unlikely to affect the country's atomic program in the long term. "If Israel attacks Iran it ...
Foreign Affairs LIVE: Time to Attack Iran? A Debate
Managing Editor Jonathan Tepperman moderated a debate between two recent authors, Colin Kahl and Matthew Kroenig. As the Iranian nuclear program progresses, the options for US foreign policy include diplomacy, acquiescing to a nuclear-armed Iran, and military action. Is a strike the least bad option, if sanctions, engagement, and diplomacy have proved ineffectual? Would a strike indicate an offensive campaign by the United States and escalate quickly and unnecessarily? Watch the expert panelists discuss the assumptions involved in decisionmaking--whether Iran is a rational state, what the real timing is for nuclear processes, and how the region will react. The Real McCain: 'Call to strike Syria ASAP exposes neo-con mindset'
Who needs diplomacy, or international law? Not former presidential candidate (R-AZ) John McCain, who became the first senator to publicly call for a US-led military strike on Syria in order to halt the nearly year-long conflict there. Taking the Senate floor, McCain said there will be no UN mandate for the air strikes he deems the only way to stop the violence -- but that a mandate isn't necessary. Jacob Hornberger, founder and president of the Future of Freedom Foundation talks to RT. He claims McCain's idea is a typical neo-con conservative mindset of foreign intervention which implies a regime-change operation aimed at ousting one dictator in order to install another, US-approved dictator. Peace Groups Call For US Withdrawal After Army Sergeant Kills 16 Civilians in Afghanistan
democracynow.org - We go to Kabul to speak with an Afghan peace activist about the shooting spree by an US Army sergeant in Afghanistan, which killed 16 Afghan civilians, nine of them children. Calls for a more rapid withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan have escalated after the US soldier reportedly walked more than a mile from his base, breaking in to three separate houses to attack families as they slept. Villagers say he then gathered 11 bodies and set them on fire, including the bodies of four girls younger than six. The attack comes as the United States and Afghanistan are negotiating the Strategic Partnership Agreement, the framework for US involvement in Afghanistan after foreign combat troops leave at the end of 2014. "We feel that surely governments need to resolve this conflict through diplomacy and move away from the failed military strategy that has resulted in all that we are witnessing today," says the Kabul-based peace activist who goes by the name "Hakim." Rand Paul Blocks Iran Sanctions
Senator Harry Reid tried to pass a new round of Iranian sanctions through the Senate without allowing any debate or amendments, but the vote failed because of a block by Senator Rand Paul. Paul aimed to add an amendment that would make sure the use of any military force would have to get Congressional approval. There are more than 80 retired military officers that have written a letter to Congress urging the body not to go along with Paul Ryan's plan and cut 6 billion dollars from development and diplomacy, while simultaneously beefing up defense. But why are these voices, those asking for diplomacy, the minority? Scott Horton with Harper's Magazine weighs in. Twitter: twitter.com www.facebook.com

Build up to WW3 - Philippines & US stage War Games in face of CHINA warning US and Philippine commandos waded ashore on Wednesday in a mock assault to retake a small island in energy-rich waters disputed with China, part of a drill involving thousands of troops Beijing had said would raise the risk of armed conflict. The exercises, part of annual US-Philippine war games on the southwestern island of Palawan, coincide with another standoff between Chinese and Philippine vessels near Scarborough Shoal in a different part of the South China Sea. China has territorial disputes with the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia and Taiwan across the South China Sea, each searching for gas and oil while building up their navies and military alliances. China said last week the drill would raise the risk of confrontation. On Wednesday, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai said China was committed to dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the dispute. "We are certainly worried about the South China Sea issue," Cui told a news briefing in Beijing, saying "some people tried to mix two unrelated things, territorial sovereignty and freedom of navigation". The comments come before high-level talks with the Obama administration. China, which claims the South China Sea based on historical records, has sought to resolve disputes bilaterally but its neighbors worry over what some see as growing Chinese assertiveness in its claims in the region. Benjamin Netanyhu tells Congress Israel doesn't need US Troops
politicaltruth.readersandwritersparadise.com Even in the midst of constant war-mongering that we need to go into Iran to protect Israel for a nuclear attack, the Prime Minister of Israel has a different view on things. A view no one seems to be paying attention to. In front of Congress in May, 2011, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyhu said, "We don't need your troops, we have our own troops." This is a common theme among people actually in Israeli politics, the former head of the Mossad Meir Dagan saying it would be "a stupid idea" to attack Iran. Even among those who do favor going into Iran, it is almost universally agreed that they can do it themselves, and they don't need help from the United States to do it, as is shown in this video. Why don't we listen to what is really going on, and let Israel defend itself (which it is quite capable of doing) instead of spending yet more money in endless and bankrupting wars that serve no positive purpose whatsoever.

Motherland
An honest and intimate look at the complexities of grief and healing, Motherland is about resilience, triumph of the human spirit and the power of unconditional love. It also reminds us of the vastly different ways in which disparate cultures confront personal loss. Each year over eight million families around the world suffer the loss of a child. In Jennifer Steinman's moving and inspiring documentary film, a 17-day trip to South Africa transforms the lives of six grieving mothers from across the US. Unexpectedly and eight thousand miles from home, each finds comfort and healing in a landscape that appears, at first, to offer little more than melancholy. Prior to their journey, the six women have each suffered the death of a child, but otherwise have little in common. And although the anticipation of a long, emotional journey with a group of strangers evokes anxiety, the women all share a desire to make sense of their tragedies and to move forward with their lives.... Operation Desert Storm: The First Gulf War 1
On the morning of August 2, 1990 the mechanized infantry, armor, and tank units of the Iraqi Republican Guard invaded Kuwait and seized control of that country. The invasion triggered a United States response, Operation DESERT SHIELD, to deter any invasion of Kuwait's oil rich neighbor, Saudi Arabia. On August 7, deployment of US forces began. United Nations Security Council Resolutions 660 and 662 condemned Iraq's invasion and annexation and called for the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of Iraqi forces. On August 20 President Bush signed National Security Directive 45, "US Policy in Response to the Iraqi Invasion of Kuwait," outlining US objectives - which included the "immediate, complete, and unconditional withdrawal of all Iraqi forces from Kuwait," and the "restoration of Kuwait's legitimate government to replace the puppet regime installed by Iraq."1 A UN ultimatum, Security Council Resolution 678, followed on November 29, 1990. It stipulated that if Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein did not remove his troops from Kuwait by January 15, 1991 a US-led coalition was authorized to drive them out. Early in the morning of January 17, Baghdad time, the US-led coalition launched air attacks against Iraqi targets. On February 24, coalition ground forces begin their attack. 'Ground invasion of Iran would make Iraq look pretty'
Russia has issued a clear warning to Israel over a possible attack on Iran. The Foreign Minister was responding to the Israeli president's suggestion that a military strike on Iran is more likely than diplomacy. Sergey Lavrov said any such attack would be a serious mistake with unpredictable consequences. The UN nuclear watchdog is about to report on Iran's nuclear activities where it's thought it will reveal computer models of an atomic warhead and other weapons-related work. Israel's main ally, the US, says it will focus on diplomacy but is ready to keep all options open. Political analyst Ivan Eland says Washington is unlikely to support Israel's push for an attack. Diplomatic Kicking: West breaks up with Iran
Britain has ordered the closure of the Iranian embassy in London and the expulsion of its staff, after the UK decided to evacuate its own diplomats from the Islamic state's capital. Norway has also closed its embassy in Tehran, with Germany and France recalling their ambassadors from the country. The moves come after militant students stormed the UK compound in Tehran. Hundreds of hard-line protesters massed outside the buildings before pelting the gates and windows with petrol bombs, burning British flags and an embassy vehicle. The attack came after Iran decided to reduce diplomatic relations with the UK following its decision to impose further sanctions on Tehran. War of Sudans: War of Super Powers? - Africa Today-04-24-2012
A seismic diplomatic row is rumbling at United Nations headquarters in New York over the circulation of a damning report by former UN experts pointing to the supply of Chinese-made ammunition to the Sudan government for use against civilians in Darfur. The row exposes fresh divisions on Sudan at the UN Security Council and disarray in Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's office. It may also unpick Beijing's careful diplomacy as it seeks to realign its relations between Sudan and South Sudan. At the same time the US's plan to station 1000's of soldiers in the South, which is already creating tensions, has not been published or looked into by the UN.
