This 30-second commercial for the University of Alberta was broadcast on CBC-TV and CBC Newsworld during the 2006 Winter Olympics. The commercial is hosted by playwright Vern Thiessen, winner of the 2003 Governor General's Literary Award. A former instructor in the U of A Department of Drama and a graduate of the U of A's M.FA. program in playwriting, Thiessen is currently Artistic Associate with the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton. Others featured in the commercial include: Golden Bear Ben Thompson, the overtime hero in the 2005 CIS University Cup; Pandas volleyball player (in huddle) Christy Torgerson, MVP of the 1999 - 2000 CIS Championship; Doctoral student Kenneth Chau, recipient of the 2005 NSERC André Hamer Postgraduate Prize, worth $10000. Chau studies the nature of light and its interaction with materials on the micro-scale; 3M Teaching Fellow Dr. Anne Naeth of the Department of Renewable Resources; 3M Teaching Fellow Dr. Andy Liu of the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences. (Edmonton) The floor was full of green and gold Friday as 1200 people lined up to destroy the world record for the largest dodgeball game ever. That was the most incredible dodgeball game Ive ever seen," said Brennan Murphy, external administrator of the Lister Dodgeball League. The previous world record, held by San Diego State University, was a measly 450 people.

Just when you thought the Pride of Arizona could not possibly out do the daytime performance on Band Day, they come back and deliver the best performance of the season. This is the full evening show for the 2010 Pride of Arizona featuring the music of Muse, including "Time is Running Out", "City of Delusion" , "Blackout" and "Knights of Cydonia".The field footage was shot by Kirk Sibley, and the stadium footage was provide by Aaron Holbrook. U of A takes back Guinness dodge-ball record
(Edmonton) The University of Alberta has reclaimed its title as the world's dodge-ball record holder. In front of official witnesses and a representative from Guinness World Records, 2012 staff, students and alumni gathered today in the Butterdome to take another crack at the record the university claimed last year. The U of A set the record with 1198 players last year, which the University of California, Irvine, successfully challenged seven months later with 1745 players. "This is a story you'll be able to tell all your lives. If somebody asks you about your university experience, you can talk about all the great professors you had and about all the great classes you had. But you can also tell them about the Guinness World Record you share with 2000 of your closest friends," said Sean Price, associate vice-president (alumni affairs). "[The participants] created a tradition here that I know is going to stand the test of time." U of A provost and vice-president (academic) Carl Amrhein thanked the Students' Union for putting on the event for the second time. "I hope it's an annual event," he said. "This would be a great thing to look forward to every year." When the buzzer rang, 1006 soft, red balls flew through the air and, in the end, Team Gold claimed the win in the world-record game.

Generic drug may be potential treatment for deadly brain cancer: U of A medical study (Part 1 of 2)
(Edmonton) Medical researchers at the University of Alberta have shown that a cheap and relatively non-toxic generic drug might be a potential treatment for perhaps the deadliest of all human cancers: a form of brain cancer called glioblastoma. A multidisciplinary research team led by Evangelos Michelakis and Kenn Petruk, both professors of medicine in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, has published evidence that the compound dichloroacetate, or DCA, affects the growth of glioblastoma tumours in humans. The findings were published in the May 12, edition of Science Translational Medicine, a journal of the American Association of the Advancement of Science. Because there currently is no effective treatment for this type of cancer, their results are highly encouraging. This work is one of the first studies in humans to support the emerging idea of altering the metabolism of tumours as a new direction of the treatment of cancer, Michelakis said. DCA is an inexpensive drug that contains dichloroacetic acid, a very small, simple molecule that resembles vinegar. It is mostly used to treat children with a rare metabolic disorder. In 2007, Michelakis and his team published evidence that DCA reverses cancer growth in non-human models by altering the metabolism of the cancer. The drug tricks cancer cells into normal energy production by changing the way they handle nutrient fuels. This causes the cancer cells to commit suicide, without harming healthy cells. U of A (Arizona Baseball) beats asu...Doug throws 1st pitch
I got selected to throw out the first pitch at the U of A-asu baseball game on 5-25-12. Was pretty nervous leading up to it but wound up doing fine I guess...right over the plate, just a little high. Fun experience. A little different being out there in front of thousands of people, hoping you don't 2-hop it up to the plate. 60 '6" never looked so far. Best thing is, we beat asu 1-0 on a walkoff hit by Seth Mejias-Brean, the starting 3rd baseman, who happens to be a former 4th grade student of mine. He got mobbed after the game by the whole Arizona team.
