Unemployment on the rise in Spain

More than five million people were unemployed in Spain last year. The country's latest unemployment figures were to be released on Friday. The ratings agency Standard & Poor's announced on Thursday that it had downgraded the country's credit rating. With 38769 people having lost their jobs in February, and the new rating indicating an unlikely loan repayment for the country, trade unions are gravely concerned about an increase in unemployment. The unemployed youth in the UK

Short video looking at the youth unemployed in the UK. It shows that the current level of youth unemployment of 1.04 million is the highest since the mid 1980s. It then goes on to look at how increasing participation in education has impacted on the unemployment rate. It then focuses on youth unemployment across the EU and shows that the UK youth unemployment rate, at 21.8%, is similar to the EU average of 21.5%. Spain has the highest rate at 47.1% and Austria the lowest rate at 7.3%. Finally, it shows that obtaining qualifications beyond GCSE reduces the chance of being unemployed, especially by the age of 24. Unemployment soars in Paris banlieues

For the youth in the largely immigrant poor neighbourhoods outside Paris, known as banlieues, an unemployment rate four times the national average has brought both issues to a head. UK unemployed youths reprise Jarrow march

The latest figures to emerge from Britain show that unemployment has risen to its highest rate in 15 years, with the number of young people without a job moving above the one million mark. A group of unemployed youths has marched 500km, down from the northeast of England to London, as a deliberate and direct echo of the famous Jarrow march of 1936, when 200 unemployed men marched to plead for work during the depression.
