Turkey clashes video: Police fight Kurdish protesters

Turkish police used water cannon, tear gas and baton charges to break up Kurdish demonstrations across the country on Sunday and one local politician died in the protests, a sign of rising tension ahead of the Kurdish New Year this week after authorities rejected Kurdish demands to celebrate it on Monday. Turkey's pro-Kurdish party and Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) armed militants have both called for large demonstrations for Newroz, the Kurdish New Year that begins on March 21, sensing the government, which has strongly backed Arab uprisings, may be vulnerable to pressure from street protests. Both the legal Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) and the PKK are demanding a level of autonomy for the mainly Kurdish southeast of the country. Turkey denounces French genocide law

Turkey furiously denounced the move by France's senate of passing a bill outlawing the denial of the Armenian genocide in 1915, with Justice Minister Sadullah Ergin saying it was "a great injustice and shows a total lack of respect for Turkey." "We strongly condemn this decision which is... an example of irresponsibility," the Turkish foreign ministry said in a written statement, adding that the government would not hesitate to swiftly implement retaliatory measures. "Politicising the understanding of justice and history through other people's past and damaging freedom of expression in a tactless manner are first and foremost a loss for France," it added. France's upper house of parliament approved a bill that will make it illegal to deny that the mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks nearly a century ago amounted to genocide. Al Jazeera's Caroline Malone reports.

Syria-Turkey: The children's view

www.euronews.com Thousands of Syrians have fled the fighting in their country to make a temporary home in camps just over the border in Turkey. For hundreds of families, that means a tented village in Boynuyogun which has established a mosque, a hospital and a school. The United Nations estimates that nearly a quarter of a million people have been forced to leave their homes by the violence in Syria. It also estimates more than 8000 people have been killed. Among that number, at least 400 children are thought to have been killed. The UN's children's agency UNICEF has said it has reports of youngsters being arrested and tortured. A teacher at the Boynuyogun camp said: "What we do here is reflected in their drawing very positively. They don't only draw about war, but what we do here too. But there are hints in their games of what they've been through, and we're doing our best to deal with that." Here, the youngsters have a chance to express what they have experienced over the past 12 months. Many choose to do so by putting pencil to paper. The teachers say the younger ones tend not to dwell on the violence but the older children depict guns and tanks, as well as the leader the opposition want to unseat. Our correspondent at the camp Bora Bayraktar said: "The hearts of these refugees are still in Syria. They're looking forward to returning home from this camp just a few hundred metres from the border." Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter twitter.com

Turkey's shrinking media freedoms

Hrant Dink, a Turkish editor and journalist who campaigned for many years for the Turkish government to recognise the genocide of Armenians, was murdered in 2007 in what many believe was a police-related incident. His is just one case concerning press freedoms which have lead many in the country to believe the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AK Party, has broken its promises to protect liberties. According to recent accounts, nearly 100 journalists in Turkey are in prison while 1000 of the country's 16000 cases pending at the European Court of Human Rights are related to media freedom. In the first of a three-part series on reforms within the country, Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra, reporting from Istanbul, takes a closer look at the state of press freedom.

Iran welcomes Turkey's Erdogan, playing down Syria split

www.euronews.com Iran has rolled out the red carpet for visiting Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, talking down recent tensions in bilateral relations. The nuclear issue has not posed a problem, with Ankara voicing support for what Tehran says is a civilian project. The US and its allies suspect the Islamic Republic is trying to develop atomic bombs. "We always thank Turkey for its stance in defending Iran's peaceful nuclear programme," said Iranian Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi, who helped welcome the Turkish premier. Ankara has offered to host the next round of nuclear talks between Iran and world powers. Syria though has strained ties. Turkey wants President Bashar al-Assad to step down while Tehran continues to support its closest Arab ally. Iran now, however, says it backs Kofi Annan's UN-sponsored peace plan. Our correspondent in Tehran, Bora Bayraktar, explains that Turkey wants a quick end to the Assad regime while Iran wants to protect its regional ally. "Prime Minister Erdogan is here to find a solution to these two incompatible positions," he said. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter twitter.com
