Tsugaru Shakuhachi Music - Tsugaru Yama Uta
Changing the instrument a little, Shakuhachi is the japanese bamboo root-end vertical flute. With only 5 holes, it was used by Komuso monks for meditation. Today the meditation musics still remain as Honkyoku. Shakuhachi is also used to accompany the shamisen in Minyo (folk songs) and Nagauta/Sankyoku (classical songs), and modern songs too (Think of some enka, or the worldwide famous anime Naruto) The songe here is Tsugaru Yama Uta, sung by the workers who lived on the feet of Iwaki mountain, in Aomori district, hence, the name Tsugaru. Yokobue (horzontal bamboo flute) is also used to play this song. The singing is very difficult, resembling the hard work and bad weather. Lyrics change between the eastern and western part of the mountain's foot. Please enjoy!

Schmoyoho's Strut That Ass Song Played on Tsugaru Shamisen
Schmoyoho/The Gregory Brothers' Strut That Ass Song rendered by moi on the Tsugaru shamisen (what else?). FACEMASKS! 'What of them, sire?' you ask? Excellent question, folks. Well, I'd like to somehow relate my exclamation to something pertinent to this here video, but, alas, I can't. As an aside, however, everything is everything! Q: In terms of what, though?! A: In terms of that which I know to be true and that which I know to be false. Also, I should add that I type it all into this virtual box for the sake of no man (or destructive organism [they're here on this planet too, ya know!])! Here's the thing, folks: All things! Ya know what I'm saying?! You know what, though? Honestly... I'm being serious here, folks! Your numbers intimidate me, but at the same time I'm glad to mingle with your kind (human beings being the antecedent here, folks!). Nah, I just can't be serious about anything. Sorry 'bout that. I'm just makin' with the self-deprecating humor there, folks! Haha. Although my ideas in typed form will presently be leaving your eyes, I'm into the idea of you checking up on my video log page of all things! Thanks! Cordially, Everyone Jenkins II, Esq.

How to Get Your Very Own Tsugaru Shamisen!
There aren't too many options if you live outside of Japan and are looking to buy your own Tsugaru shamisen, but here's some guidance. You can get shamisen and other Japanese instruments and accessories from Chords Canada. They stock them in their Toronto warehouse and ship to most places around the world. They also sell Kyle Abbott's book Shamisen of Japan. www.chordscanada.com Shamisen Katoh's website www.shamisen-katoh.com When you email Katoh san, be sure and type SHAMISEN (yes, all caps) in the subject field as his email server interprets mail from foreign ip addresses as spam. As long as you use basic English, Katoh san will likely be able to understand you. Assuming I don't hear from hundreds of you all at once, I'd be glad to help with any necessary translation. Buy the cheaper student model Tsugaru shamisen here www.ishibashi-webshop.jp (click on the "English" tab in upper right hand corner) Info on this company's international order protocol/how to order here: www.ishibashi.co.jp Build your own shamisen and learn how to play it with Kyle Abbott's book Shamisen of Japan. Schmoyoho's Sanity Song on Tsugaru Shamisen! 現代津軽三味線
Haven't covered a Gregory Brothers tune in a while, but I've always really liked this songification. Powerful but peaceful prose set to mighty moderate melodies by the one and only SchmoYOho. Tsugaru shamisen is a three-stringed fretless lute from northern Japan! I studied under Kevin Kmetz (Youtube username: shamikami) and Fukushi Toyoaki in Japan (he does not have a Youtube account, as far as I know). We did not study Gregory Brothers melodies during our lessons, though. That came later.
Tsugaru Shamisen music - Tsugaru Jinku
A rather simple, but lively piece from the tsugaru region again, named Tsugaru Jinku or Dodarebachi. The intro sequence is another version of the famous jyongara bushi named Naka Bushi (middle or second song), which differ from the other jyongara pieces in rhythm and singing method. Also, I finally got in hands a nice shamisen and bachi ^-^. The sound is better now, but the technique remains the same, heheh. Please enjoy!
Everything You Need to Know About the Tsugaru Shamisen and...Other Stuff.
A short performance (Tsugaru Jonkara Bushi) followed by a comprehensive history of the not-so-ancient Japanese three-stringed fretless lute called Tsugaru shamisen. Praise and glory to Mark Thornton, my joke writer/proprietor of the funk/death metal shamisen extravaganza that is God of Shamisen (my sensei's band)! www.youtube.com/godofshamisen As regards this video: Tsugaru shamisen - Mike Penny

Tsugaru Shamisen Music - Akita Nikata Bushi
Not really a Tsugaru song, but often peformed by tsugaru shamisen players due to high speed and a whole lot of Oshibachi (to press one string up and slide down to play the actual wanted string) With origins in Akita province, Aomori's southern neighbor, this song is really played on normal chuuzao shamisen, used in Akita. Uses the Honchoushi tuning (Do Fa Do, in case CFC)very common in Akita shamisen. Also a very difficult song to sing. It may sound very noisy at first glance, but a very beautiful piece indeed, ruined by my webcam and technique, heheh. Please enjoy!
Psyche x Tsugaru [Cute Overload!]
I know it's short, but it feels good to make a video. It feels like it's been a long time. I have been wanting to make a slideshow for a while... and I finally got off my lazy ass and made one ^^ With Psyche and Tsugaru! There isn't enough of them on youtube! Dx ...Technically, you can say they are Izaya and Shizuo, but I consider them completely different characters. Along with Delic and Hibiya :D I friggen love Psyche and Tsugaru. I also love Delic and Hibiya, but as a close second. Drop me a message if you want to learn more about them. I consider myself an expert on them xD So yeah... Psyche and Tsugaru... but Izaya, Shizuo, Delic and Hibiya make an appearance at some point. :) Song: Cute Overload - Parry Gripp I found the pictures at: psychedelictsugaru.tumblr.com and Photobucket They all belong to their respectful artists :) edit: Oh god. Ignore the ugly black sides of the video xD On another note: Sorry I havent made a legitimate full-length avatar video in a while.. I haven't really been in the mood to make more... for a few reasons: -I have found new interests besides Avatar. (I still love avatar dont worry about that) -Every time I find a song that I think has potential for a good video, it turns out 17 other people already beat me to it. =/ This happened a few hours ago. I got so pissed, I had clips and effects in mind and everything. So sorry. I don't really care what you think about my uploads anyway =/ I upload what I feel like uploading. And thanks for 110 ...

Malinowski, "Marvel Not, Joseph" Performed on Tsugaru Shamisen
For a long time I had wanted to try arranging this great composition for shamisen. Unfortunately, in this arrangement I had to omit much of the composition because I couldn't play or otherwise imply well enough the dense multi-voice canonic craziness of the original. Check out the full arrangement by the composer, Stephen Malinowski (Youtube user name: smalin), at: www.youtube.com Tsugaru shamisen - Mike Penny

Tsugaru jamisen shamisen 津軽三味線
For shamisendemon. Me playing the shamisen after not touching it for months, not practicing it regularly for a couple years. And it shows! I'm so sloppy... I hate doing multiple takes so here is my playing as is. The first tune is my own and the second is an old one called Tsugaru Jingu. edit: I've uploaded it twice but I keep getting audio sync problems for some reason. I'm too lazy to encode it again so this will just have to do...
Tsugaru kaikyo fuyugeshiki - TV Montage
I don't have clips from the first TV appearance, but I collected clips from the second 2 Gunma TV appearances and the NHK appearance of "Jero-ko" and made a little music video with audio we recorded at a karaoke establishment. Yay, enka! I do not own these clips, but I hope that GTV and NHK won't mind them being used to expose the western world to the wonders of the enka style and Japanese culture.

Takahashi Chikuzan
Takahashi Chikuzan (高橋竹山) (born Takahashi Sadazō in 1910, died 1998) was a renowned Japanese Tsugaru-jamisen performer and composer. He was born in Kominato, a village that is part of the Hiranai township in Aomori Prefecture. He lost his sight at around age two from measles before becoming a live-in apprentice of the Tsugaru-jamisen performer Toda Jūjirō near his home town. Before World War II he spent many years touring the Aomori and surrounding countryside, playing before doorsteps and making money any way he could. After the war he became more widely known, first as an accompanist for the famous Tsugaru folk song singer Narita Unchiku (who named him "Chikuzan"), and subsequently as a solo performer of the Tsugaru-jamisen repertory. His performances, for many years taking place regularly at a small venue called "Jan-jan" in Shibuya Ward of Tokyo, often featured long solo improvisations, which he entitled "Iwaki" after the tallest mountain in Tsugaru. His most famous disciple, a woman who has assumed the name Takahashi Chikuzan II, continues to perform versions of Takahashi Chikuzan's repertory. Takahashi Chikuzan I made a huge number of recordings, some of which are still in print today. If you feel something from his great playing,I'm very pleasure^^!

津軽三味線Bix Beiderbecke on Japanese Tsugaru Shamisen!
Since My Best Gal Turned Me Down I learned and adapted this early jazz tune to the fretless Japanese Tsugaru shamisen, but I apologize for the low quality of the video! This was simply me practicing this newly learned piece in front of my computer, but I will hopefully be able to redo it in better quality soon. I also have posted on Youtube the Bix Beiderbecke version of Sorry performed on shamisen. Thanks for watching.
