In an interview conducted by Jon Corbett, the engineer who recently exposed how the scanners could be fooled by simply securing an object inside an external pocket sewn on to an item of clothing, "Jennifer," a TSA screener, also reveals how the federal agency forced people without the necessary training to operate the scanners. When Jennifer wrote to her Congressman complaining about the problems, the TSA retaliated by removing her from screening duties and began the process to dismiss her altogether. On the scanner screen of the TSA flunky, denser objects appear dark, and the background is BLACK. Black on black = INVISIBLE, so as long as a passenger's dense object (gun, knife, bomb) hangs on his SIDE, it will remain invisible to the flunky. But now — a blogger is raising concern over another issue — whether the scanners actually work. Boy Genius Report explains. "According to [Jonathan] Corbett, who was the first person to sue the TSA when it introduced the scanners in early 2010, people can bypass the devices by simply fixing items they want to hide to their sides...objects held in clothing on a person's side will not appear over the dark background in the TSA's scans." As Corbett says in his video he got the idea for the test when a highly secure airport in Israel wouldn't buy the scanners. To test the scanners, Corbett sewed a pocket in the side of his shirt and fooled the body scanners at Fort Lauderdale and Cleveland. The video went viral. In response — the TSA took to its blog. Wired reports. " ...the government's response was that, 'For obvious security reasons, we can't discuss our technology's detection capability in detail, however TSA conducts extensive testing of all screening technologies in the laboratory and at airports prior to rolling them out to the entire field.'" TSA Body Scanners can lead to Cancer
TSA's body scanners raising health concerns The TSA body scanners are back in the news with more health concerns. At European airports the European union has banned body scanners due to the fact that they can be linked to cancer according to research done. The TSA is qouted saying the machines work "well within applicable national safety standards" and this year they have posted various radiation surveys for each unit at US airports to assure people that these body scanners are indeed safe. John Pistole, TSA head said that he initially said he would agree to a investigation of the machines - however he know feels it is not nessaccery. A Body Scanner is commonly refered to as a backscatter, passengers stand in place and are scanned with a X-ray beam. There is a alternative in which scanners using millimeter waves which dont show a health concern. According to Pro Publica there's about 500 machines at airports in the US Nation, half of the body scanners use the millimeter wave technology and the other half use the X-ray beam.
