Cold Steel Trail Master
A quick look at one of my favorite trail knives of the last 23 years, the Cold Steel Trailmaster. I bought it "used" in 1988 or '89 at a gun show in Nashville. Great knife. For the tree huggers out there, if you ever are lucky enough to own your own land and maintain trails and such for a period of years, you'll quickly learn that it's quite a job keeping limbs and weeds from growing into your walking trail. Yes, you have to actually cut limbs and make them bleed in order to prevent your trails from becoming "jungle" again. It's more the tick-laden limbs growing into the space where you walk than it is things growing up out of the ground that require the annual attention. Trails in parks are maintained by those in charge of the park or simply the hundreds of people walking the trails each day. On my own land, it requires the application of various evil cutting tools on a regular basis. When I go hiking, I often carry a knife like this, a tobacco cutting knife, or something bigger if it's my primary goal that day, to clear trails.

It consists of 5 parts or movements, each an evocation in tone of a particular scene typical of the Grand Canyon. From the former Mongol capital Karakorum to the Danube, young Australian adventurer Tim Cope retraced the path of the first nomads and followed the route taken by legendary Genghis Khan as he forged his great empire. Over three and a half gruelling years, and guided by an old Kazakh wisdom - "to understand the wolf, you must put on the skin of a wolf and look through its eyes" - Tim lived just as the ancient nomads did. Tim travelled 10000kms alone on horseback across the Eurasian steppe through Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine and Hungary. When he set out with his fearless dog Tigon as a companion there was no certainty - no backup from a camera crew, no escape route - and he could barely ride a horse. Ahead lay wolf-infested plateaux, the glaciated Altai Mountains, minus fifty degree temperatures on the 'starving steppe', scorching heat in the Kazakh desert, violent clashes between sedentary and nomadic societies and the deep forests and treacherous peals of the Carpathians. He would also suffer the greatest tragedy of his life. To cope he would have to draw on everything he learnt from the nomads. The extreme challenges gave Tim empathy and insight into the nomadic way of life, and as a young man growing up; the journey became a personal rite of passage. Along the way, just as the nomads did, Tim sought refuge with local families, who welcomed him with open arms, traditional nomad hospitality and taught him the ways of the steppe. Beginning at 1:38, the final three segments are at normal speed....I just kicked it up a few notches on the trigger! Also, I plan to try this again at 500 yards or longer.....in an open field. Viewable in 1920 x 1080 HD if you have the bandwidth. By choosing the 720HD or 1080HD view settings, you can best see the bullet trails. EQUIPMENT: AR15 Bushmaster Varminter, .223 Remington, 24" barrel with 1:9 twist. Fiocchi 55 gr FMJ. Scope is a Leupold Mark III, 4.5 x 14 x 50mm. Target is an 8" x 16" steel popper from Mike Gibson Targets. The steel is 3/8' thick, 500 Brinnel. The bullets disintegrate and have minimal if any impact on the steel. SAFETY NOTE for the trolls: Based on viewer comments from other long distance shooting videos, some people fail to grasp the concept of private property. This is a modest tract of land in the family. Targets were on a hillside. Downrange and surrounding, there are thousands of acres of uninhabited property belonging to other landowners. I extensively check the property before and during all shooting sessions.
