Tourmaline! What a wonderful gemstone! Like sapphires, tourmalines come in a wide variety of fabulous colors. Probably the most valuable of tourmalines is the "paraiba" tourmaline from Brazil. Paraiba tourmalines have been known to sell for $15000 per carat. However, also from Brazil, comes the deep rich color of the rubellite tourmaline. Rubellite tourmalines get their name from their ruby-like colors. The ring offered here by Lucy's features an exceptionally large (8.28ct) rubellite tourmaline, very well color saturated, and unusually "clean." This magnificent gemstone displays a deep, rich "raspberry" color, with excellent dispersion (sparkle). The rubellite was cut in Brazil, utilizing the highly reflective "portuguese" style cut. FYI: Rubllite tourmalines are indeed the same stone as pink tourmaline. The difference is that the rubellite is much more color saturated, and much more rare. New appraisals for large Paraibas must be done by a tourmaline gemologist, these stones are going for often 5k to 40k per carat so you want to aquire the highest appraisal for your resale. Gem Hunting Trip San Diego - Tourmaline at Himalaya Mine
Our family took a trip out to the Himalaya Tourmaline Mine in San Diego County, California, to screen tailings (mine no longer open to the public). Back in the early 1900's tons of tourmaline was shipped from San Diego to imperial China where the Empress had a facination with the pink version of the precious gem. A crazy hot day! If you try your luck at the mine, bring hats! Awesome quartz crystals popped up in our pile at Himalaya as well. Denise was our host. She's super friendly and has amazing knowledge of all kinds of rocks and minerals. Thanks fo the tips Denise! We'll be back. Military gets a discount and last we knew kids are free with every paying adult. We also made a video of our visit to "All That Glitters", an impressive exhibit at the Natural History Museum of natural and cut gems and minerals, including gold - much of it from the San Diego area! The supply lasted for 5 years and as quickly as it came it was gone. Nice gems as they did not require heating and therefore were less risk as heating often causes damage to the gem. It was a supply that almost literally fell into my lap. I was set up at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show and the miner set up her booth right next to me. It gave early access to her tourmaline before the show opened.
