Amsterdam's pot tourism in danger

www.nma.tv SUBSCRIBE to Next Media Animation www.youtube.com A Dutch court is attempting to ruin the fun for everyone with a new plan to outlaw the sale of marijuana to foreigners. This law would target coffee shops that traditionally sell the drug to their patrons. This ban could damage the "pot tourism" industry of the Netherlands. Facebook: www.facebook.com Webpage: www.nma.tv Twitter @nmatv: twitter.com Tumblr: nmatv.tumblr.com The new law came into consideration after southern cities in the Netherlands saw an increase in drug-related crime. As of May 1, the so-called cannabis cafes in south became off limits to tourists and only available to the Dutch who hold a "weed pass". These rules are expected to reach other parts of the Netherlands including its capital, Amsterdam, by the end of the year. Cafe owners are already rebelling through by hiring attorneys and downright ignoring the new law. What's the point of visiting Amsterdam if you can't enjoy a good high? At least the brothels are still alive and thriving.

Egypt stages festivals to boost tourism

Visitors to the coastal resort town of Dahab were treated to live music and a variety of water sports in a festival sponsored by the Egyptian Tourist Authority recently. The event, in its second year running, was part of the government's initiative to increase national revenue through one of the country's main economic sources, tourism. "We've emphasized what's going on in Dahab tourist-wise and next year as well what we're going to try and do is bring people in, work with tour operators and get people to come in on organize packages and things like that. But I think it's starting to put Dahab on the map, it's a pretty unique place, it's not like Sharm and Hurghada where it's more like mass tourism. There's a lot more culture in Dahab and certainly the scene is more gauged towards sports and activities,'' Dahab Festival organizer Hayden Falloon told Reuters. The ETA said this event was launched as a forefront in tourism promotion, and organizers hope it will grow internationally in an effort to showcase what Dahab has to offer to visitors. The organization is planning a beach cleanup day in September involving resort towns on the Red Sea coast, such as Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada. The tourism industry along with the rest of Egypt's economy suffered as a result of a national uprising as part of last year's Arab Spring which resulted in the ouster of Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak. According to the tourism minister, around 14.7 million visitors visited the country in ...

Cruise Tourism, USA - January 2005

Watch More: www.youtube.com January 2005 Alaska's sleepy fishing villages are being overwhelmed by hordes of cruise ship tourists. The sheer size of the invasion is creating unease amongst locals. The Alaskan town of Skagway all but died when the gold rush ended 100 years ago. "Unemployment was over 55%, the railroad had closed down and people were just down on their luck," recalls resident Buckwheat Donoghue. But today things are very different. The town has a new lease of life and has been revived by tourism. In summer, tourists out number residents here by nine to one. While locals welcome the tourist dollars, there's growing concern about the environmental pollution they bring. "The ships generate thousands of gallons of waste and tonnes of garbage," complains environmentalist Gershon Cohen. Others fear the character of their home towns are being destroyed. Now there are calls for a strict limit to be imposed on cruise ships. Produced by SBS/Dateline Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

German Students Learning Hebrew at Frankfurt University: Jewish Studies Program a Success

You may well wonder why so many Germans are learning Hebrew here at Frankfurt University. Sure, Hebrew is the original language of the Bible, but there are many other reasons and they have nothing to do with theology. 120 students are currently learning Hebrew in the Jewish Studies Program at Frankfurt University, and around 400 have completed the 5 year program. Ten universities across Germany offer Jewish Studies with Hebrew courses and at the moment there are more than 500 students. Hebrew is the only ancient language to have been revived as a modern spoken language. Today, Hebrew still serves as the language of Judaism, and it's also the official language of the state of Israel. Germany is the third-largest source of European tourism to Israel, about 150000 German tourists visited the country in 2011, and the Israel Ministry of Tourism plans to raise that number to 200000 by the end of 2012. The appeal of the holy city is obvious but there are many other reasons to visit Israel. Many tourists from Germany know German can help them if they meet someone who speaks Yiddish, a mixture of German and Hebrew. But now more and more Germans are arriving in Israel with some knowledge of Hebrew to help them better appreciate contemporary Jewish culture and the people living in Israel. Modern Hebrew is spoken by most of the 8 million people in Israel, and is the second language for 5 million people. However, since Jews live in countries the world over, and around 3 to 4 million ...

British Columbia Tourism "Gaining the Edge" - YouTube Gaining the Edge - I think not.. The state of British Columbia Travel and Tourism can be summed up in one word 'dismal.' The Olympic 'bump' didn't materialize and today the headlines tell the story.. BC's "Olympic Bump:" More like a whap upside the head - Seattle Times Further it goes to say that... Numbers of overnight international visitors to the province for the first eight months of 2011 were down by more than 200000 compared to the same period in 2009, the Globe & Mail reports today. That compares to a much less-severe drop across Canada over the same period. This after former BC Premier Gordon Campbell, an unabashed Games supporter, helped pitch the multi-billion dollar event by predicted a doubling of BC tourism revenue by 2015. Now, his replacement, Christy Clark, is hopeful for a meager 5-percent annual growth in the next five years, the paper reported. As a travel professional I can sight a number of factors to why BC Tourism is in a slump and will continue to struggle even with Gaining the Edge strategy. First BC stand for 'Bring Cash' - compared to other tourist destinations BC is very expensive, Vancouver has the highest gas prices in Canada and the high property prices also find their way into the cost of pretty well everything else such as accommodations, food and other services. Recently we paid $5.00 per hour for meter parking in downtown Vancouver. Second.. The province is beautiful enough, but it is ...
