Blondie - Sunday Girl / Dreaming (TOTP 1979)
TOTP performances 25 December 1979. IMHO the cutest babe ever to grace the TOTP studios. Original transmission recording with no silly logos or stupid voiceovers a la TOTP2. Can this really be nearly 30 years ago?
Nirvana Smells Like Teen Spirit (TOTP 1991 - Live Vocal)
Another VHS conversion from my collection. A very different approach to the song on Top Of The Pops. The opening line is: 'Load up and drugs and kill your friends'. Quite different from the studio vocal.
The Specials - Ghost Town (TOTP)
The Specials lip syncing their classic number one single Ghost Town on Top Of the Pops in july 1981. UK 2 Tone CHS TT17 7" Released: 20 June 1981 A side Ghost Town B side Why? Friday Night, Saturday Morning Ghost Town marked the pinnacle of the labels achievements. Critics have called it "one of few singles to reflect perfectly a period in history" and "one of the most important records of our time". Released at a time when Prince Charles and Lady Diana were about to marry and inner city riots swept Britain the single summed up perfectly the irony of the whole period. It stayed on the number 1 spot for 3 weeks and became the labels first single to sell a million copies and also marked the first UK 12 inch from 2 Tone. With the exception of Dance Craze 2 Tone had been very quiet throughout the first half of 1981 and friction was becoming apparent within the Specials camp. According to Terry Hall the recording of the single was dogged by bad feeling among the various band members even getting to the stage were they wouldn't go into the studio together. The arrangements of the singles' others tracks also caused ill feeling. Terry Hall would have preferred his composition Friday Night Saturday Morning to have consisted of just him and a piano in a pub sing-a-long type fashion but in the end he had to make do with version which was released. The structure of the song Ghost Town has also been a topic of conversation. The typical format of verse-chorus-verse was set aside in ...

Rod Stewart and The Faces- Maggie May- TOTP 1971 (FULL VERSION)
No video of this fantastic Top of The Pops performance by Rod and the Faces seem to show the start to the end, so here it is, from the TOTP2 2002 New Years Party special. The Faces line up: Rod Stewart (Vocals) Ronnie Wood (Lead Guitar) Ronnie Lane (Bass Guitar) Kenney Jones (Drums) Ian Mclagan (Organ) John Peel (Mandolin) (was Ray Jackson on the record) Rod explained some years later that he and the band had been drinking all day and were playing football in the BBC corridors with Slade! After trying to get into the Pans People changing room they messed around a bit more with the football and Rod said to John Peel 'do the performance with us and bring the footie!' So here it is, a memorable performance which is top of many peoples list of classic TOTP moments, including Noel Gallaghers. Copyright of the respective owners, 1971, 2002.

ABBA : Fernando (Top Of The Pops) HD
Unique version here recorded for BBC TOTP's 1976 "Fernando" was ABBA's firstst non-album single, released in November 1975. Lead vocals were sung by Anni-Frid Lyngstad. The track appeared on the 1976 ABBA release Greatest Hits in some countries, although in Australia and New Zealand, "Fernando" was included on the group's Arrival album. "Fernando" also features on the multi-million selling ABBA Gold: Greatest Hits compilation. This song was to become ABBA's biggest selling single of all time, selling 6000000 copies in 1976 alone. All in all, Fernando sold over 10 million copies worldwide. "Fernando" was not originally an ABBA song but was written for ABBA member Anni-Frid Lyngstad. It appeared on her 1975 #1 Swedish solo album, Frida ensam. The song was written by Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Stig Anderson and carried the working title of "Tango". Preparations for recording began in August 1975. The original Swedish language version's lyrics were written by ABBA's manager Stig Anderson and differ substantially from the English language version. In the original, the narrator tries to console the heartbroken Fernando, who has lost his great love. "The sorrow can be hard to bear, but the fact that friends let us down is something we all have to cope with". The bittersweet chorus goes: "Long live love, our best friend, Fernando. Raise your glass and propose a toast to it, to love, Fernando. Play the melody and sing a song of happiness. Long live love, Fernando ...

Roxy Music - Virginia Plain (Live TOTP 1972)
"Virginia Plain" is a song written in 1972 by Bryan Ferry. It was recorded by his band Roxy Music and became their first single, backed with "The Numberer" (an instrumental composed by Andy Mackay). It became a Top 10 hit in the UK, peaking at #4. The song was not present on the original UK LP version of the band's debut, Roxy Music, and had not even been recorded when the album was released. After the success of the album in the UK, it was included on later reissues. In 1977, it was re-released as a single, together with "Pyjamarama", originally the second Roxy Music single, to promote their Greatest Hits album, and reached #11. "Virginia Plain" features bass guitarist Rik Kenton, who joined after Graham Simpson left the band. It begins with a deceptively quiet introduction, followed by an instant increase of volume as soon as the vocals come in on the first verse, this apparently being a deliberate ploy by Bryan Ferry to trap unwary radio and club DJs. The song was also notable at the time for its lack of chorus and for its synthesizer work by Brian Eno. Former art student Ferry took the title "Virginia Plain" from one of his own paintings, featuring images of the cigarette brand of the same name and Warhol superstar Baby Jane Holzer. Holzer is also referenced in the lyric, "Baby Jane's in Acapulco / We are flying down to Rio". ______________________________________ Roxy Music is an English art rock group founded in the early 1970s by art school graduate Bryan Ferry ...

Robin Gibb RIP - The Bee Gees - Massachusetts - Robin, Barry & Maurice - (Live on TOTP 1967)judep22
Robin Gibb, one of the three fantastically talented Gibb brothers who made up the Bee Gees, today passed away after a long battle with cancer aged just 62.. Robin, along with his brother Maurice, who died in 2003 and elder brother Barry together made up probably one of the most successful singer song-writer groups of all time. It has been estimated that the Bee Gees' career record sales total more than 220 million, making them one of the best-selling music artists of all time. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. His music will be greatly missed. The trio's pop-songwriting instincts and distinctive high harmonies led to many No. 1 hits over five decades. Asked in 2010 for his greatest achievement, Gibb told The Guardian: "Having the most successful catalog of songs in the world, alongside Lennon and McCartney." The band of Gibb brothers was famed for the influential 1977 "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack that became one of the fastest-selling albums of all time with its innovative fusion of harmony and pulsing dance floor rhythms, along with Night Fever and Jive Talkin'. They enjoyed success in every decade from the 1960s to the 2000s. Robin also charted intermittently as a solo artist. He released six solo albums between 1970 and 2006, and scored a British No 1 single as recently as 2009 with a new version of the Bee Gees' song 'Islands in the Stream', originally performed by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers for Comic Relief. Robin Gibb was born ...

Sniff 'n' the Tears - Driver's Seat TOTP - Jun 79 (Hi Qual)
DJ Steve Wright's all-time favourite record, and also a favourite of mine. When I first heard it, I did not realize it was from the late 70's, as it still sounds fresh today. Although a world-wide hit, amazingly it failed to reach the UK Top 40, due to reasons mentioned below. Sniff 'n' the Tears is a British rock band perhaps best known for their song "Driver's Seat", a hit in many countries (including number eleven on the American Billboard Hot 100 chart). The exception was the UK itself where a problem with EMI's pressing plant meant that the single was not available following the band's appearance on Top of the Pops and it peaked just outside the Top 40. Fickle Heart, the album containing "Driver's Seat", was followed by three more for the Chiswick record label: The Game's Up (1980), Love/Action (1981), and Ride Blue Divide (1982). Singer and songwriter Paul Roberts went on to make two solo albums for Sonet Records, City Without Walls (1985) and Kettle Drum Blues (1987). When an advertising campaign saw "Driver's Seat" top the Dutch charts in 1992, Roberts took Sniff 'n' the Tears out on the road in the Netherlands and Germany, followed by a new album No Damage Done. Since then Roberts put out one more record, 2001's Underground, and is currently working on new material. "Driver's Seat" was featured on the soundtrack to the 1997 film, Boogie Nights. The band has various musicians, but the original member is lead singer and songwriter Paul Roberts.
Shalamar - A night to remember ( Live @ TOTP 1982 )
Jeffrey Daniel, member of Shalamar, in an amazing live... Daniel first performed "the backslide", a physically complicated dance technique, now known as the "moonwalk" on British television, during a performance of Shalamar's "A Night to Remember" on Top of the Pops. The song was a hit in 1982, almost a year before Michael Jackson moonwalked on the Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever television broadcast. He was a big fan of Soul Train - on which Jeffrey Daniel had been a back-up dancer. According to Jackson's sister La Toya, Jackson was a fan of Daniel's dancing and sought him out. He soon met, hired and learned from Danie
