"I've never been to Topeka, but I have reason to believe it sounds like this." From the album "Don't Panic" - listen and buy here: www.jongomm.com (Also available on iTunes and from Candyrat.com and GuitarCDs.net) With this tune I was trying to capture that feeling of nostalgia you can sometimes get for a place or time you've never actually experienced, only imagined. In this case I was going for 1950's smalltown America. I decided to name it after Topeka (pronounced "Tuh-PEE-kuh"), Kansas, which ain't exactly small, but it is the hometown of my buddy Andy McKee, the loveliest, most down-to-earth solo guitar player on the circuit. The tuning is Ab, Eb, C, F, G, Bb. Like an Ab major 13 chord. And the top two strings both get retuned during the intro and outro - the G goes to an A and the Bb to a C. If you want to try this tune at home, I'd recommend tuning up a tone from where I am, cos I use super-heavy strings - try it at Bb, F, D, G, A, C. Amazing funnel cloud time-lapse over Topeka, Kansas!
On May 21, 2011, storm chaser/photographer Chad Cowan documented this extremely photogenic supercell in northeast Kansas. In the first part of the video, the wall cloud and funnel(s) were directly over downtown Topeka, and it appeared that Topeka was about to take a direct hit. Luckily, the storm did not produce a tornado until it was northeast of town. After the sun set, Chad dropped south and documented a storm that had developed near Emporia, which produced an EF-3 tornado in the town of Reading where it destroyed over 20 houses. The final shot in this video is of that storm approaching and blacking out the horizon. Shot with the Canon 5D Mark II and 17-40 f/4L wide angle lens.

In a shocking move yesterday, Topeka's mayor and council repealed the ruling banning domestic violence and released 18 suspects from jail without charge. Victims of domestic abuse are stuck in an argument between county and city politicians over who should pay for prosecutions. Shawnlee County's district attorney last month handed over responsibility for prosecuting crimes including domestic abuse and battery to the city. But Topeka's leaders say they cannot afford to provide services for domestic abuse victims as well as rent jail space from the county for suspects. Domestic violence support groups were horrified at the move, saying that 'people could die while they're waiting to straighten this out'. 'I absolutely do not understand it,' said Rita Smith, executive director of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. 'It's really outrageous that they're playing with family safety to see who blinks first. People could die while they're waiting to straighten this out.' The repeal came during National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. City and county officials have received hundreds of emails in the last few days from people upset over the situation. It is a natural formation, but legend says that it is the burial mound of a native Indian chief, Abram B. Burnett. Burnett was an Indian chief, but he was not born in Kansas, nor was he buried on this bluff. His remains are in a graveyard south and west of the large bluff. Chief Burnett's Potawatomi name was Nan-Wesh-Mah. He was born on the north side of the Tippecanoe River near Muncie, Indiana in November, 1812, the son of Potawatomi Chief Shau-Uque-Be and Cone-Zo-Quah, the daughter of Chief Chebaas, who was the brother of Chief Topinabee. At the time, the Potawatomi were a powerful tribe, numbering perhaps 10000. He was educated at a Baptist missionary school for Indian children in Fort Wayne, Indiana. That school was under the direction of the Reverend Isaac McCoy, a famous missionary who was involved in the establishment of Indian reservations in Kansas for eastern tribes, including the Potawatomi. Nan-Wesh-Mah served as one of McCoy's principal interpreters during the 1820's. He was an important mediator for the Potawatomi tribe. WIBW Fire in Topeka, Kansas
*01/05/2012- 4:15pm- There was a fire today at the old WIBW building (north Wanamaker) here in Topeka, KS! I was driving north on Wanamaker around 4pm when I noticed black smoke in the distance... I drove up closer and saw that the old WIBW building was on fire. I parked in the Johnny Carino's parking lot and got this footage... amateur footage taken by a professional lol ;-) jk... hopefully nobody was injured or hurt. I still don't know what happened, what caused or started this. Hopefully the Topeka FD can figure that out.

5/21/2011 Topeka, KS Tornadic storm and large hail
Intense storms moved across eastern Kansas with a tornadic storm hit Reading Kansas and moved into the Topeka, KS metro area. BNVN Weather Paparazzi Tony Laubach was in Topeka, KS with Team Twistex for Discovery Channels Storm Chasers as the storm was dropping hail up to tennis-ball size as well as tornadoes north and east of town. In the video that Tony shot of this storm, it starts out with a wall cloud and funnels as storm moves across the Topeka, KS metro area. The opening shots show a large funnel churning away behind some trees near Interstate 70. As the video continues, it shows a rapidly rotating wall cloud almost directly overhead on the northeast side of Topeka. The storm chase had to stop as tree's were blocking the path and traffic was forced to turn around. As the video continues it shows some intense hail from the tornadic supercell that fell around Topeka, KS. The footage include various shots of hail falling on the highways with vehicles driving through it. A shot of people blocking an I-70 overpass hiding from the hail. Conversion for alpha and beta emitters is calcuated differently, and the "geiger counters" reading in mR/hr may not be accurate."
Capital Cold Cases, Topeka Kansas - Premiere Episode
KTWU and Capital Area Crime Stoppers have partnered together to create a new program offered for the first time in NE Kansas. Capital Cold Cases investigates some of Topeka's unsolved crimes. Family members paint us a picture of Washburn art student Tirell Ocobock, who was brutally murdered in 1976 on her way to her part-time job as a veterinary assistant. Following that, we learn about the case of 5-year-old Jackie Hay who was abducted from her front yard in 1981. CAPITAL COLD CASES was conceived and born out of a need for local law enforcement to gain new leads on local cold cases in an attempt to solve decade-plus old homicides. KTWU Emmy award-winning producer Scott Williams, and Topeka Police Department 23-year veteran law enforcement investigator, Detective Douglas Searcy, take viewers through an active local homicide investigation in hopes that someone watching holds the last piece of the puzzle needed to help solve these cold cases. Crime Stoppers was the logical choice for the public to forward such information needed to law enforcement and remain anonymous. The program is hosted by Topeka Police Department reserve officer Dawn McWilliams.

Abandoned Mall: White Lakes Mall in Topeka, KS
The White Lakes Mall (or Center) in Topeka, Kansas has definitely seen better days. This used to be a happening mall in the 1960's, but now, in 2011, the mall is clearly deteriorating. The wood floor (not there in the 60's) is falling apart and buckling up, apparently due to water damage. The ceiling is not much better either, with many spots and stains. The leaves from the overgrown trees are all over the floor, adding to the deserted feeling. RIP White Lakes Mall PS I used a Panorama app on my iTouch to take some of the pictures, but when making the video the panoramas didn't quite work out. So I had to split them into separate pictures, those are the ones with the odd black borders (that's how they are recorded in the app). Still worked out well though!
